Question about Nikon Coolpix S3 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Nikon coolpix s3 black screen

Camera failed after limited use. out of warranty, sent to nikon, they say it may be the image sensor. want $104 to fix. will only warrant fix for 6 mo. I have seen other posting with similar problems. I think Nikon should recall or fix the bad units. coolpix seems like a loser.

I think this model has issues. my unit was not used much. the fix cost will put the camera cost at over $450, I do not think it is worth it. I have had much better service from Cannon and Kodak , these units have taken use and abuse and keep working for years.

My Nikon Coolpix S3 is about two years old and suddenly the monitor went blank.  I know the camera continues to take pictures, because when I point and shoot and then download to my computer, it shows the images I shot but couldn't see through the monitor.

Should I bring the camera to a repair shop or send it back to Nikon?

yah, my coolpix s3 has the same black screen problem, though it can display the pictures taken before. Somebody said it might be due to a defected CCD.

I have had my Nikon coolpix S3 for about 2 years and has been a wonderfull camera, all of a sudden last week the screen turned black, but was working a couple of hours earlier! The image veiwer is black, it seems to still take photos but show up black on both the camera and my computer when downloaded.

I'm a fanatic with my camera and am so disappointed about this, especially when the night it failed it was my partners birthday! When I told my friend, she told me that's exactly what had happened to her Nikon coolpix S3 too! When she sent her's into Nikon to get it repaired she just never heard back from them, and never got her camera back. When she complained they just denied ever having received it in the first place.

I don't know what to do? I can't afford a new camera right now as I'm saving for a holiday next month, but what good is a holiday if I don't even have a camera to record the memories on?

Very annoyed that this seems to be a problem for alot of other people too!

I agree with you, although I would not rely on Kodak. I find their digital products don't stand up to much. Based on what I see come through my digital lab, I recommend Canon, Casio and Sony

Black screen appears on nikon coolpix, camera is on.

Hi,

The black screen problem means the lens sensor is spoiled due to over exposure to heat. Its better to give it to Nikon service centre. If your camera is under warranty period its well and good they will replace the lens sensor for free of cost.

Thank you

My Nikon Coolpix S570 has a purple and black striped screen and I can't take pictures but everything else on the camera comes out clear. I can read the menus and I can see any previous pictures perfectly...

Your camera has the classic and unambiguous symptoms of a failed CCD imaging sensor. It's a common fault with all digital cameras but apart from when there's manufacturing faults should not usually occur until a camera is five to six years old.

There is nothing which you've done to cause the fault, nor is there anything at all you can do to fix it.

The only fix is to have it replaced, but it's not a DIY job and the part is not cheap. However, your camera is probably less than a year old so should still be under warranty; if you purchased it in Europe from an official supplier then you have a two year Nikon warranty. To make a claim you'll need to visit the Nikon website in your country and complete a repairs form which you send with the camera along with copies of any proof of purchase required. Without proof of purchase the repair is chargeable.

After repair, check the images carefully, looking for any marks on the images which are in the same place on every shot: these may be quite subtle such as a slightly blurry small patch or two (almost like an out of focus water droplet). If you have any of these symptoms then promptly return the camera to Nikon to do the repair again as it's not uncommon for a clumsy repairer to leave debris or even adhesive/grease on the sensor. If these faults go unnoticed then most manufacturers try to wriggle out of responsibility by claiming the repair only had a ninety day warranty.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 Digital Camera Problem

I believe this is the issue that Nikon is repairing at their expense. You can find the advisory on the Nikon website. Here is some of the text from that advisory:

It has come to our attention that in a limited number of COOLPIX 3100, 3500, 4500, 5000, 5400, 5700 and SQ digital cameras, an electronic component may, in some instances, fail affecting your camera's performance and/or operability.

While only a limited number of COOLPIX 3100, 3500, 4500, 5000, 5400, 5700 and SQ digital cameras are affected by this advisory, if your camera presents symptoms that can include (1) images with a strong color tint, (2) images that are totally black and/or (3) images with visible defects, Nikon will, upon confirmation that the problem is associated to this Service Advisory, service your camera free of charge.

To obtain complimentary service for cameras affected by this advisory, please click the link below to download and print the Service Return Form. The Service Return Form provides detailed return instructions.

The Frequently Asked Questions button at the bottom of this page offers more information about this advisory and, should you have more questions, also provides information about how to contact Nikon.

We apologize for any inconvenience you may experience.

BTW, I sent my E5700 to Nikon a couple of years ago -- for this same problem. They repaired and cleaned my camera -- and had it back in my hands within 7 days.

I hope this helps!
Regards,
CharlieJ

No image on the scree

If you can play back images and they can be seen on the LCD monitor, then the problem is the CCD sensor ( see image below to get an idea what I am talking about ).Nikon fixes this problem  free of charge so that is good news for you. But if there is no image in playback mode then it might be the LCD monitor.Unfortunately this will not be repaired free of charge if your camera is out of warranty.ba67e42.jpg
