Re: How can i install and format a hard drive

Install the HD into your computer case with screws, connect a ribbon cable and a power cable, ensure that your HD is set to master or slave, depending on where it is installed in your drive chain (IE: only, or first, device should be master, second device should be slave). Startup the computer. Windows should recognize it, but if it doesn't, Under WindowsXP and above, goto control panels, open administrative tools, open Computer Management, Select Disk Management, find the new disk in the lower portion, right click on it, and create a new partition.

Hope this helps!

Format hard drive

This is generally how your format the hard diskand install Windows.
First you need a Windows XP or Windows Vista installation CD and the productinstallation code, which is printed on the Windows label on the bottom of yourlaptop.
Boot up with the Windows installation CD start and follow the instructions toinstall Windows.
Next Delete the existing Windows partition.
Next Create a new partition.
Next format this new partition - Format the partition in NTFS not a quickformat. This will prepare the Windows for a clean install. Quick now if you only want to format the hard drive.

I have tried everything Ctrl F11, Ctrl F9, Ctrl F8 and nothing allows me to reset the harddrive

Im not sure that you understood the concept of resetting the hdd...this can be done only by formatting ...and from the windows you can not format but the partitions(drives) that not contain the windows installation be able to format all partitions you have to use a installation cd with the operation system ( a boot-able one ) ..and boot from cd selecting this operation from Bios settings ...and go along with the clean installation not from the recovery partition or cd ...
after you get along with the clean installation and formatted the hdd and remake the partitions ...and finished the installation of the operating system ...than you can use the recovery cd to install the drivers and the factory settings and programs .....
another easy way to do that to hook it on another computer ...and just format it from windows...this will erase it clean ..and you will have to reinstall the OS after that ...

How do i re install windows xp? please

  1. If you have a Windows XP CD place it in the CD drive.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. When it says "Boot from CD..." press Enter.
  4. Wait for the CD to load, then follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. When a list of partitions is displayed, choose the largest one and press D (NOTE: This WILL delete EVERYTHING on your hard drive).
  6. Follow the instructions to delete.
  7. Press "F" to format the clean hard drive. (May also be "L" depending on your revision of Windows XP). A quick format will be sufficient unless you have spyware, malware, and/or viruses.
  8. Select "NTFS file system and delete old files".
  9. Wait about an hour for the drive to format (times may vary depending on the size of the drive and if you chose quick format or not).
  10. When the drive finishes formatting, follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows (it displays the keyboard keys and actions on the bottom of the screen).
  11. When it finishes installing, it will start up normally with a clean hard drive.
  12. Note that my instructions are vague and could be different depending on the type of computer that you have.
  13. Additional Note: You are able to do a re-install of Windows Operating System without formatting the hard drive. If this is the case, a backup won't be necessary unless you absolutely see fit to do so.

Cannot install operating system on hard drive windows xp.. i can format the drive but the files all load but cannot install..i get the message cannot read the hard drive

There may be a bad sector on. If you are choosing quick format during install, it skips the sector check. Go ahead and do the full NTFS format and see what happens.

Make sure the jumper is set to the correct setting. If it's the only drive on the ribbon, it should be master or CS. (Cable Select)
