The focus mechanism for this camera is different from other Fuji cameras in that instead of using 3 evenly spaced guide pins like on smaller compacts or, a motor and drive thread like the S5600 or S5700. The S1000fd uses a guide rod and spring and 1 guide pin to move the focus lens up and down to sharpen the picture. 1 pin is all that can jam and cause problems. Getting to it involves desoldering the control board from the main board just to access the lens unit. Then desolder 2 ribbon strips and secure 2 tension springs before you can remove the lens construction.
this tip is very helpful although it may be a bit over my head. I have not soldered this small in years. Thanks to this poster, David. I am game and will report back if i go with this. I will look further but i think this is my answer. Great web site. I hope it does not have ill effect on my laptop. I will spread this around. thanks very much.

I'm not doing anything. when I turn the camera on it say "focus error" and will not let me do anything. I have turned it off and on and also taken the batteries out.
Are you shooting close up or normally?
