Question about Kenmore Elite HE4 Electric Dryer

Kenmore HE4 Electric Dryer runs as soon as you plug it in, doesn't heat and display isn't lit

Hello,

I just bought a used Kenmore HE4 electric dryer and as soon as you plug it in it starts running but doesn't heat or have any lights or anything at all showing up on the display. I did open up the back and found several pennys and dimes and you can also hear a coin jingling as the drum is spinning. Does anyone have any idea as to what I can check because I just can't afford a new dryer and taking 4 children to the laundry facility just isn't reasonable.

Thanks so much! CAM

I forgot the model number is 110.85871400 and the Serial number is M8150481. Thanks again.

Is that a repair that I should consider or should I just save up for something else? I did check the power cord and everything is in check. Thanks again!

I bought it from a local person who's roomate had left it behind. I paid $40 and it has the pedestal so I knew that I could at least recover my costs by selling the pedestal if nothing else. It was worth a try to see if I could get it fixed. I did open the back up and cleaned everything and checked to make sure nothing had just come loose but I haven't messed with that front panel which is where I'm sure the computer is...

I guess I bought it knowing that it didn't work properly hoping that I would repair it for less than a new dryer. Don't know if that makes any sense but this past year was really hard for our family financially so I'm trying to do my best to help out. I'm sure to most it may seem like a senseless purchase...

I was able to take off the rear panel after I had removed the top panel. I took it off and vacuumed out all of the loose lint and collected several more coins loose in the bottom. Mostly I was looking for any loose connections with the flashlight and any signs of it overheating such as smoke marks but it was in pretty good shape otherwise.
Okay, I just took off the top cover again and when you're looking from the back to the front, I see a metal plate that covers the area where I can see two green circuit boards - one in the middle and one on the left - both behind the control panels respectively. I can see that there are two screws on top as well as two screws that are coming from the opposite side that will need to be removed. Is there a way to remove the front plastic panel so that I can access those screws?
Also, I'm very curious because I've never replaced any major parts but are Kenmore and Whirlpool dryer parts interchangeable? I really appreciate you help.

I'll be able to take that panel off in just a bit but just for reference - is there a way to tell by looking at it that it is the bad part?
Btw... that was really interesting information about Kenmore and Sears because we have always bought Kenmore appliances thinking that they were superior to other products...
Let me know how we can arrange ordering the part so we can get that in process. I don't know what your procedures are or if you have a site, etc...
    Thanks again!

Okay, this is the inside of that control panel without that silver metal piece on it. Just want to make sure I'm looking at the correct part because appliances are not my strong point. I know how to work on my own car but for some reason appliances seem complicated... I also have a paypal acct. so let me know what ID and how much and I will send it over... I truly appreciate your help with this...

I'll be keeping my eye out for it. I'll let you know as soon as I get it in. Will I need to reset anything or will it do it's own thing?

Okay, got the part in last night and reassembled the dryer... This morning I got it down the hallway (I was working on it in the living room) and plugged it in.... WORKS!!! Thank you so much from my entire family! Your help has been such a blessing to us.

Make sure that the cord is installed correctly make sure that the white wire is in the middle of the red and black wires. Other than that it sounds like a Main computer issue.

Just curious... how did you purchase this dryer.....did it ever work???

  • joey shearer
    joey shearer Jan 16, 2008

How did you open the back up?? Nothing is axcessed through the back. The Computer is axcessed through the top. The lid comes off by removing 2 -- 1/4" screws on the back (the lid lips over the back) once screws are removed the lid can slide back then come up and off. The computer is on the left hand side (if you are standing at the front) under a black metal L shaped panel (you will need to remove screws securing panel). I am very interested in assisting your family in getting this dryer to work for you. I only hope that nooone has taken it apart and played with the wires, that would make it nearly impossible for me to figure out whats wrong via internet. Also if you are fairly certain that one day, when the previous owner had the the dryer, on its own wouldnt shut off and the display is blank --and now as soon as you plug it in it starts tumbling with no display--also the control on button doesnt respond when pressed even while its running ----the main CCU is the place to start. The part is whirlpool part number 8546219 and is $160 retail. I can offer to sell you that CCU for $100 which is my cost on the board (never offered this before but id like to help anyway I can), and probably $20 shipping, if you would like.

The computers that you are seeing is called the display board, and they are mounted to the back of the plastic control panel. I believe that these parts should be ok.....hopefully. The main control (ccu) is mounted under the black cover that runs front to back on the left side (standing at front). Under this panel is the computer that i believe needs replacement. Also Whirlpool does build this dryer for sears (kenmore) but sears has all the major companies build appliances for them (they dont make anything----just puts kenmore on the machine and the controls are a little different). But it would be whirlpool parts that you will recieve for your dryer even if you bought them directly from sears.

Yes Kenmore has a huge name reconization and they did use to be very good products because they worked very closely with whirlpool --and thats who built all the Kenmore Laundry products for 30+ years. Now they have all the brands building for them, including samsung (supposedly samsung is going to start building most of sears' products) and samsung is total junk. You cant get parts for them and their products are a joke to all in the industry. As far as looking for a problem with that board, look for a relay on the board to maybe have some burned spots, or any burned spots on the board, it definatly can look fine and be bad thought. I dont have a website and I usually dont offer part sourcing but I do have a paypal acct and would prefer that if thats ok with you. Also If it doesnt fix it feel free to send it back and i will refund the money.

The Left side computer is the one I will send --- I guess yours is not painted....sorry. Im hoping the control panel one is ok. For the paypal acct just go to paypal.com and click send money. My email is amasuperbike@comcast.net. Enter that and send $120 and ill ship it out.

Im hoping as soon as its installed ( you will have unlpugged it, of course) also make sure all the wires are connected proper and not touching any metal, plug it in and the motor shouldnt just come on like it does now as soon as its powered up without even touching the contol on button., and hopefully the display should come on.
