I have been given a DELL8400 computer with a Acer AL506 monitor, when I turn it on a out of range message comes up, how do I fix this..

The Acer monitor was not likely used with that computer, they were just mated together.

Assuming the video card is the original Dell, Download the Dell video driver from Dell for that CPU that you have, and install it, use a different monitor if you have to load it. Try attaching the Acer monitor when that system is shut down, and boot up. It should see it as a plug and play monitor and then auto select the monitor settings. The old monitor setting is what was stored in the computer inf file.

With the driver installed it will match a driver to that monitor.

If the card is not original Dell, then you need that video card's driver installation file. You may need to resort to doing a search for the first part of the data on the DB15 header if there is no clear manufacturer tag with number on the card itself. Such will be the case with some Nvidia cards made for other vendors like AOpen.

Then you can right click "Properties" and select the screen resolution you want.

it is more critical to have the video card driver than the monitor, however the Acer driver may have some features that are not accessed by the Dell driver.

Monitor displays message "Out of Range" when trying to set the resolution to 1600x1200 I have NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M video card with native NVIDIA driver installed

The max resolution to your monitor is 1680x1050. The video card can't help you with the resolution if the monitor doesn't support it.

Connection hook up problem

Set the resolution lower.

It is telling you that the resolution you want is beyond its normal operating range.

just drop it to lets say 800 x 600
Then bump it up one resolution at a time until you get the message again, then drop it back one.

Running monitors above the acceptable range can drastically shorten their lifespan.
With lcd monitors you are much better using the DVI cable if yout video card supports it.

Out of range message on screen

Check video display properties for 1440 X 900?(19inch) at 60hz, sometimes a well intentioned driver update from M$ will clobber mine the same way.

You will need to get a CRT monitor so you can see what you are doing to re-install the drivers for the LCD monitor.

Monitor out of range

Most commonly, this problem is caused by an incorrect refresh rate setting. LCD monitors typically DO NOT support refresh rates higher than 60hz - and this is no exception. Try running the game in "safe mode" if it has one. Adjusting the in-game video settings should solve the problem, just look for a screen refresh rate or any video-related setting with a number followed by "hz". Set it to 60, everything should be fine.

It could also be that at some point the game changes resolution (this frequently occurs if there is an in-game movie or cut-scene). In this case the resolution settings for the in-game movie might be at fault, check them if you can.
