Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I bought a new laptop which had a free upgrade for Windows Vista Anytime Upgrade. I downloaded the program on my son's laptop and after a couple weeks the comper locked up and will only display the windows activation box requesting a product key (which is no where to be found on the Vista packaging). The computer will only show the windows activation screen. We are not able to get past this. I do not know what to do. It was implied that the upgrade was free software with the package. The screen also has a message in the lower right corner stating Windows Vista (TM) Build 6000 This copy of Windows is not genuine. The laptop was recently purchased from shopnbc. Please advise. Thanks! TAMMY LONG

Free download windows 8

Windows 8 is not a free program. You need to purchase it. If you have an existing Windows Vista or Win 7 then you can purchase a Windows 8 upgrade, it is cheaper.

Windows anytime upgrade

You could have been a bit more specific
which operating system ? and what is the problem ?

Whether your HP Pavilion can be upgraded to Windows Vista depends on your current operating system and hardware capabilities. Certain minimum requirements must be met to install Vista, including 15 gigabytes of free space on your hard drive and a CD-ROM drive to read the Vista installation CD. Once you have verified that you meet the prerequisites for upgrading to windows Vista, the actual process is rather simple and does not require many steps.

Verify that your HP Pavilion computer is capable of supporting Vista before you begin installing it. See the Tips section below for the minimum requirements. Back up your important files and data to an external storage device such as a CD or flash drive before continuing. Connect to the Internet and then place the Vista installation CD in your optical drive. Wait for the setup wizard to auto-start. Click "Install Now" when the prompt appears. Then, click "Get important updates for installation" and click "Next." Enter your Windows Vista product key when prompted to do so and click "Next." Click "I accept the license terms" on the next page. Select "Upgrade" or "Custom (advanced)" when prompted for which type of installation you wish to install. Choose "Upgrade" to keep your old files or "Custom (advanced)" to perform a clean install. Wait for the installer to finish. Set your personal preferences once Vista has been fully installed on your HP Pavilion.

When i bought the unit I had a desktop running on Windows XP. Now I have Woindows 7. How can get a software upgrade to be able to download my data?

Did you upgrade from Xp to Vista first ?

First, you will want to BACKUP ALL of your programs.

Since you did not upgrade to VISTA, you will LOOSE all of your programs when you upgrade to Windows 7, so be sure to backup all of your programs and files.

If you wish, you can use an external hard drive and a program called WINDOWS EASY TRANSFER to make this task easier.

See the link below for this FREE program.

Now, for the fun part! Insert the Windows 7 disc into the computer and start or restart the computer.

Follow the onscreen instructions to completely install Windows 7.

You will now need to reinstall each of your programs.

If you used Windows Easy Transfer, you can use the list of programs that it prints out to be certain that you reinstall all of your programs.

Hope this helps.

I installed windows anytime upgrade and i dont have any word programs, what do i do?

Windows Anytime Upgrade allows you to upgrade to a superior version of Windows, provided you buy a key to activate this new version. For instance, you can upgrade form Windows 7 Starter to Windows 7 Home Premium or from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate.
If you need a word processor program, you can try the free productivity suite Open (which word processor, Writer, is fuuly compatible with the MS Office suite). Dowload from here (
Several free stand alone word processor programs are available also. Just do a Google search.

Windows 7 ultimate upgrade from vista home premium on vaio laptop, now some programs and my cd-dvd-rw device won't function right, if at all. Also wan-miniport drivers installed themselves and I can't...

In regards to upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 the thing to look at is how long were you running Windows Vista before you did the upgrade.

Normally you would need to reinstall a few driver just because Windows 7 has a different kernel then Vista does but alot of times you are reinstalling the same drivers.

Normally when you are having the problems that you are having this is a sign that you had some problems in Windows before doing the upgrade. This is why in general when doing an upgrade it is good idea to do a full reinstall of the OS with your upgrade. Note with manfactured computers like your notebook what you should do is back your data then do a factory restore of your Windows Vista. After the restore you will have a clean base to do your upgrade on so Windows 7 should run fine.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions

The only way you can upgrade your Operating System is by installing a new version. Windows XP would be your best option.
You can get a genuine Windows XP from a computer store, online or from a friend who can give it to you for free.
