I have an unusual problem. I own an HP Laserjet 5L Xtra that I have LOVED for many years for its simplicity, reliability and small footprint. This past week it started hanging up on me. I cannot find the right troubleshooting info in the user's manual or on the web.
I am using Microsoft Word (2003) in Windows XP. Whenever I send a print job to the single sheet input slot (envelopes, 4x6 recipe cards, etc) the printer hangs up. Nothing goes through the printer. The middle (data) and bottom (ready) indicator lights on the front panel blink and the top (error) light stays off. This combination is not discussed in my user's manual or in any repair document I have seen so far.
I went to HP.com to reload the drivers, but could not find any for this model. There were no software upgrades, no new programs added or changes to the operating system at the time this started happening.
Has anybody seen this happen before? Any suggestions for repairs? Any fixes?
Thanks in advance for the help.

This probably means that the document you printed is set to manual and the printer is waiting for input
try this:
print the document, when the data light is on, press the button on the printer, does it print? if yes go into word and under page setup set the printer to "Auto select" for the paper tray.
or remove paper, print, when the data light comes on, insert the paper into the single sheet tray
hope this helps

Headstrong,
Thanks for your fast reply. Yes, this was my first thought too - print a manual feed document / watch middle light flash / press the printer button.
I tried your first option and got the same condition (middle and bottom lights flash and no printout).
I tried your second option, removing all paper, sending a manual feed document to the printer and THEN adding the paper. The top (error) light went off. The bottom (ready) light came on. Then the bottom and middle lights both flashed and nothing happened.
As an aside, I went to control panel->printers and viewed the error message for the print jobs and they say "out of paper" yet paper is in the printer (both trays) and the amber error light that normally comes on whenever the printer is out of paper did not come on (except for when I tired your second option).
Thanks for trying. I appreciate the help. They were good suggestions, but we're still not there yet.
Regards,
Rick Kaiser
