IBM ThinkVision L170p 17" LCD Monitor Logo
Anonymous Posted on Dec 01, 2009

IBM ThinkVision 17" L170P, the problem is that the screen is black and power indicator is steady green on. Can not turn off the power indicator at all.

To JSShears, monitor is not connected to the PC right now, all connectors disconnected from the monitor. It only has a power cord connected. There is no menu on the screen and the screen is black. It is clear that the problem is with the power supply of the monitor. The question is what I need to change to fix it and if it has any internal fuse or not.

Check the DVI connections on your computer and your monitor. It is possible that there is not a good connection. Do you have access to another working monitor? If you connect a different monitor, and that monitor comes up, it could be the DVI cable or a bad monitor itself. If neither monitor comes up it could be a bad video card or port, or the computer may not recgonize it under Properties, Display, then settings when you right-click on the monitor, if you are using it as a second monitor.

Sorry for getting back with you Sergio 61. I've been very busy lately. I am afraid to say that I lack the knowledge of the internal workings of the monitor to provide a solution to your comment. If the monitor is still under warranty, I would look into sending it back for a replacement which I am sure you already know that.

It doesn't show the image from computer, the screen still black but the power light appears on.

Connect another monitor to the PC and confirm that the PC is working , specially the display drivers/card. If so the fault is only with the monitor and it can be related to power supply issue, a backlight inverter circuit shorting or a fault in the main board., all of this mightt require a good probe with the use of manual. So please check this out and confirm if the fault is with the monitor or the PC.

IBM ThinkVision 17" Monitor displays for 1 second then black

This seems to be a common problem with these monitors. Have a look very closely and see if you can still see something there. From there, either send it to get repaired, or, if you are handy with a soldering iron, open it up and replace the 4 main capacitors (at least one of them will be "popped", but it is handy to replace them all.

In order to open the monitor, you will need to remove the stand, and make sure you get all of the screws out before attacking it with a screwdriver.
I have 5 IBM monitors at work with the same problem, and opening them up has shown the popped capacitors.
Again, only recommended if you know what you are doing. Screwing it up will leave you with nothing.

LCD (IBM) monitor power light is green but no display

Make sure the monitor lead which goes behind the computer is in correctly and has not come loose.

Unscrew it from the PC and put it back in again.

Monitor wont turn on, green power light on

Hi you can inspect that what's wrong with your monitors. After you turned it on and the screen went black, you have to check that if you can see the image on the screen or not by shining a flashlight into the screen, not directly but find the best angle to the screen and take a look very closely. If you can see the icons or any image, there will be a minor problem. This is because of the lamps inside screen. Some of them were broken and it is very easy to replace. If you cannot see anything on the screen, there'll be some problems with inverter board. If you have soldering tool and want to fix it by yourself, check the caps first. It may cause this problem. Some caps might show leaking or burn spot on the board because of too high temp. If you don't have soldering tool, you better go get a technician to do so. Hope this help!! If anything I can help you with, feel free to let me know.
Thank you,
