When you look through the lens, it looks really disstorted and like the picture is dripping, or melting. It also looks that way when you take the picture and look at it on the LCD screen. I also tried taking the card out and putting it in the computer to view the pictures and it still looks the same way.

I am having a similar problem....when you look through the lens the picture
I am taking is distorted with vertical or horizontal lines. I know what you are
referring to by the "melting" problem. It appears that all the colors from the picture I am taking run together. The main color I see is green. You cannot see a clear image at all it looks abstract.

I am having the same problem---wavy lines radiating from the focal point. It almost looks like someone put a greasy thumbprint on the lens. This just started a few weeks ago.

Nikon coolpix 5700 shows no memory left after purchasing a new card & batteries

The largest CompactFlash card that Nikon approved for the 5700 is 256MB, which is what I'm using in my 5700. That's small by today's standards and you probably won't even find it in stores. I see some web sellers have 256MB cards for only $6 or so. Other commercial card sellers on the web claim that the 5700 will handle CF cards up to 1GB capacity. That's what I might try since online they're selling for as little as $8 plus shipping. Given that the 5700 was introduced in 2002, any cards bigger than 1GB probably won't work.

LCD and viewfinder malfunction

There is a documented malfunction with this camera, and Nikon has issued a service advisory and form you can send in with the camera so they fix it. Click on the following link, send in the camera with the form, and Nikon should fix it for free (assuming the problem is the one documented by Nikon) . I had to do it about a year ago, and the same thing just happened with my brother's camera.

Nikon coolpix 5700

at the back of the camera next to the view finder (bottom right hand corner) is a button and icon marked SEL. pressing this button toggles the lens image from the view finder to the lcd screen and back again. IF neither view is available then I suspect your camera needs some TLC at a repair shop. hope this helps.

LCD blank & No picture taken

This appears to be a well known CCD problem, which Nikon acknowledges only for the COOLPIX 3100, 5700 and SQ models. Nikon denies the CCD problems on the 5400 are related, even though a Google search for this problem returns numerous results which claim the same defective Sony CCD sensor was used in the 5400 as was used in the 3100, 5700, and SQ models. "System Error" message in LCD

Having a "System Error" message display on the camera's LCD display generally indicates a problem where the camera will need to come to Nikon for repair. A System Error is a general error which can be caused by many things: lens problem, CF Card problem, general camera failure, etc. Before sending the camera in, check these: Use the memory card that originally came with the camera (or a Nikon approved card) Remove and replace the battery If the error is still displayed, contact Nikon's Service Department. If the above tips do not help the camera must be sent to Nikon Service, there are no user serviceable parts on Nikon Coolpix cameras.
