I have a similar problem. Out TV goes blank intermitently, but the red light does not flash. The alternate tuner will work when I split the screen. I assume that my main tuner is going bad. How much does a tuner cost, is it a DIY operation?

Panasonic Viera TH-50PZ80U no back light

There is no backlight CCFL lamps to Plasma displays, like LCD ones. If there is no screen with plasmas, the Z-Sustain board should be checked and replaced. This is actually a skilled work, and not a user repairable one, if the user is not experienced to work with plasma displays. Check this link and see whether you can do it by yourself. The link have enough details about the faults to Panasonic brand TVs.

It is most deffinately a convergence chip issue. The die for no reason. They can be bought online for around $10 dollars and anyone with experience with soldering can replace them pretty easily. I have done it.

Flashing RED lights in Panasonic TVs means a fatal error code. Unplug the TV, wait 1 minute and replug. If the LED still flashes it needs professional service.
