Hitachi 65SWX20B 65 in. Rear... Problem

My set is a little over 4 years old and just developed "convergence" problem where the colors are separated and the lines are not vertical and horizontal when I select "magic focus" in the manual mode. I am able to combine the different colored lines to produce white lines (and a better picture) but the lines are curved and I lose a curved portion of display from top of the screen. I have to use "magic focus" in the manual mode to "converge" the three colors every time I power on the set.
Hitachi tells me that I must contact a local independent repair shop. If anyone has fixed a similar problem (e.g., replaced a chip), I would like to hear from them.

Thanks.

    Guru Draude,

Thanks a lot. It sounds very helpful. Now I have to open the unit and find the convergence amplifier module. Any help with that will be further appreciated.

    Thanks,

I have the exact same problem. My set is also a little over 4 years old and just developed "convergence" problem where the colors are separated and the lines are not vertical and horizontal when I select "magic focus" in the manual mode. I am able to combine the different colored lines to produce white lines (and a better picture) but the lines are curved and I lose a curved portion of display from top of the screen. I have to use "magic focus" in the manual mode to "converge" the three colors every time I power on the set. My chips though are STK392-110 & the back one is STK392-150. It looks like I will have to take the board out as they are probably soldered in. It looks like I can just remove the four screws, then disconnect the board from the one next to it, and lift it out, right? Any special trick to seperating it from the next board? Where exactly will I find the resistor burned in the output of the IC's? I'm not sure where to look for the output of the IC's. The chips were right where you said. I found the chips for less than $7 a piece, I'll really be a happy camper if I can fix this myself! Thanks!

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are baHitachi 65SWX20B 65 in. Rear... Problem - 2c07611.pngd be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

You have to replace 2 IC's STK 392-120 in convergence amplifier module. If you're a good handyman you can do it by yourself, if not call a tech. Also you can find one resistor burned in the output of the IC's. Replace that too.

How you open it (unplugged first) is in your right hand. You'll see 2 aluminium radiators with 2 black IC's. Got it!

On Rear Projection TVs there is a thing called "convergence" in which the color bands are lined up so that they can mix to make the colors that we see on the screen. When a TV of this type is moved or bumped around, or even near a source of electrical interference it can throw this out of alignment. Many TVs have options in their menus to set convergence.

I believe it is under Menu > Picture > Convergence I'm having trouble finding the exact process used for this, but it will be noted in your user guide as well.
If this does not resolve the issue you may need to purchase a convergence repair kit which requires a considerable amount of electrical knowledge and can take several hours to repair.

Convergence issue. lost about an inch on right side of screen model 65SWX20B after i manually adjusted convergence grid.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.
