Question about Whirlpool ER6AHKXPQ Top Freezer Refrigerator

Roper refrigerator top freezer

There is a burning smell in the freezer. The back wall will actually melt any plastic freezer bags leaning up against it and produce an awful smell.
We have only noticed this only this week. We have been renting since August 2007. We had a maintenance man out who says that this is a common complaint with these refrigerators.
We dont feel safe with this going on, but the janitor assured us that they have had many complaints in the other units. He stated that it is the self defrost working and it is common an to keep any items from touching the back wall. (which is ridiculous!)

Could you confirm this? Is it safe?

Re: roper refrigerator top freezer

Based on info given, possibly either a defrost timer or a defrost heater thermostat going bad.(depending on your model) Both tell the defrost heater when to deenergize and stop the defrost cycle. I suspect with the defrost heater getting this hot..over time it will burn out. Then the auto-defrost will not work. Then it will cause ice to accumulate on the evaporator coils cutting air flow and causing the refridgerator section to not cool properly. On the safety issue...many, many, complaints don't make the problem go away or ANY safer does it? Make another call to maintenance, maybe they will send someone else out with more expertise on the matter. I wouldn't feel comfortable letting it go. Hope this is of some assistance.

Good Luck

Re: roper refrigerator top freezer

I can confirm that this is definately not normal. During a normal defrost cycle temperatures will rise to around 50-60deg F. But shouldnt get hot enough to melt anything. Something is wrong- have it checked by a professional. Demand that.

Smells of freon

Depending on whee the smell is originating from there is only a very small possibility that it would be refrigerant. More then likley burning plastic, melting ice, burning motor. Refrigerant doesn't actually have a smell. The only way you can get a wiff of something the leak would have to be substantial and then you would smell the oil vapor in the air and it would dissipate somewhat quickly. If you do not see oil anywhere you less than likely have a leak.

Excess water dripping into refrigerator from freezer. I am in the process of defrosting. Ice build up behind freezer back wall. Do I need a new heater or will clearing the ice from drains suffice?

Clearing the ice build up is a good start, the problem though is the drain pan under the coil in the freezer thats iced up is blocked so when the defrost heater comes on and melts the frost from that coil,it the water is collecting in the freezer and in many cases drips into the fresh food compartment, clearing the drain will resolve your leaking/ice build up issue.THE DEFROST HEATER IS GOOD melting the frost in the first place and hence forth that melted frost stays in the freezer and becomec ice.

My Roper refrigerator has water inside it at the bottom and on lower level shelves. How can I correct this?

That water is from the melting frost of the automatic defrost cycle. Their is drain in the freezer behind the back wall under the evaperator coil that is blocked, so instead of defrost water draining it's pooling in the freezer or in some case espically on models with the freezer on the top,the water is leaking from the freezer vents into the fresh food compartment.
The way to clear the drain is remove back plate and remove all ice build up and GENTLY make a small hole in drain through then totally flush w/warm water.
The exact location of drain is under the coil behind back freezer plate in the center

Good luck

I hope this helps

Heated the middle body it smells like a plastic burned

do you mean that the area of the outside cabinet where the door seal presses up against is warm? If this is what your describing then your compressor fan is not turning and causeing the lines to heat up unplug the machine until you are able to replace the fan if this is the issue you are seeing on your unit if not please clarify when you said heated middle body and where the smell of plastic is coming from. also is the freezer and fridgerator still getting cold? You may also want to check the light area I have seen many times where the lights will melt the plastic. If you have any further questions message me back I await your reply Thanks Rick

the banging and crackle noise can be from the defrost element in the freezer side as it heats up it melts the ice on the evaporator it can be a bit nosy. there shouldn't have a burning smell tho get it checked out

Looks like water dripping from frezzer, but there isn't an ice maker hooked up in the freezer. top refridge shelf covered with water and ice

you have a blocked drain.i use a steamer to clear the drain, they cost around 50 bucks, take off the back wall.melt out ice with hair dryer, crack out as much ice that you can with plyers or hammer, gently hit it and it will crack out if the floor is a sheet of ice and a putty knife comes in handy, when you melt out and remove ice stick the tip of steamer in drain and clean the drain out,hit it for 10 seconds then stop wait a minute and hit it again, you don't want to damage the drain line it's plastic so take your time, pour hot water down drain to make sure it's clear you might have to use hair dryer and heat up the inside of ceiling in the fridge section in the middle of back wall and ceiling where the drain is, the air ducts are there also, whenwater stops dripping you'll know you melted all the ice, good luck

I need to let you know that your refrigerator may fall under a consumer alert. It is possible that the lights are remaining on while the doors are shut and can result in property damage. The issue is the light melt the plastic and damage the refrigerator, food and possibly smoke damage. If this is not the case please let me know and I will assist you if there is something other that this causing the problem. Thanks Sea Breeze

Hi: When this happens it means that there is frost built up in the back of the refrigerator. You are having an issue with the defrost heater or the defrost timer. There is an off chance the refrigerator's freezer is over packed with food and there is no circulation. If you're handy empty the fridge and take a hair dryer to the back wall to melt away the frost from behind. You will have to remove the back metal wall. Look at the heater. It will be at the bottom of the freezer behind the back wall. A glass tube with a wire coil running through it. If the coil is broken, replace it. If not you will be looking at a defrost timer. Sometimes on a circuit board. Searspartsdirect will have the parts and schematics. I hope this helps, Jeff
