Wierd Antics Hello. My Sony DSC-W5 opens and closes three times when I switch on the power. After this little ceremony it seems to work fine. I get the same open and close action when I switch off the power as well. This has been happening for months now...thankfully the camera still functions but does anyone have an idea how to fix this? or what caused it in the first place? Thanks.

To reset turn off the camera and remove the battery. Hold down the power button for 15 seconds then release. Reinsert the battery pack and power on the camera.
It's busted.
Take it to a dealer for repair.
You may be able to claim this on your Home Contents Insurance.
If it costs too much to repair, hold a little ceremony and send it to a recycling centre for proper burial.
: )
Never drop cameras, expose to sand water (unless waterproof). These will surely break a camera. Always be conscious of your camera to edge of tables or other potentially damaging situations. ALWAYS use straps and safe storage.
I'm sorry it's broke. : (

Remove the Battery pack from the Camera then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
Next, reinsert the Battery pack in the Camera and try to turn it ON. Make sure that the Battery pack is fully charged. If the LCD remains white then the LCD screen needs to be serviced or replaced.
I had exactly same issue with mine w17 and tried so many ways to fix this.
Was even ready to buy some new camera instead of this Sony dsc w-17 but
then found a way of resetting camera in such way: powerdown and take
batteries out. Then hold "power" button for 30 seconds, release and
repeat couple of times. It helped Also if it won't work try contacting Sony online chat support - they seem to be helpful.
I bought a "for parts" dscw50 off ebay & unscrewed the side panels; this allowed me to remove the whole top panel (entire silver piece) & exhange it with the one on my own camera which I had broken the shutter button off of. Works fine now.
I had the same problem, I gently pried open the black windows of the shutter with my index finger nail, and applied very gentle pressure (pulling outward) while I pressed the power button. THEN... the whole zoom assembly moved EVER SO SLIGHTLY. So, I repeated the exact same process, with a little bit of pressure... and voila... the lens assembly opened fully and I was able to take pictures.
Look at the supplied software and try the Yahoo/etc software but beware that most cameras are not built to run as a webcam. The designs are for size and wieght so the cameras tend to overheat and expire. If they don't tout the webcam feature, then you know why.
