Garmin c340 does not charge

I bought this GPS last week and while driving for a week it was good but when I went out of town, the battery run out even though it was plugged into my cigarette charger while driving, is my charger defective? I think the only reason why it was working my first week is the initial charge that was in the unit. Did anyone encountered the same problem?

My Garmin C340 will not charge at all from the vehicle charger. I charged it completely from my PC (left it plugged in to the USB port all night). Used it for about 4.5 hrs and it is dead again. No wonder they took the product off the market. Wish I had not purchased it.

garmin c340 has been reding low battery periodically for the past 11 months but now it has died and won't accept a charge while we are on the road

I have had my Garmin GPS since Christmas 2007 (about 4 months). Normally I keep it plugged into the cigarette lighter in my car while I drive. Today, however, my phone battery was low, so I took the GPS charger out and used my phone charger for about 10 minutes. The GPS battery must have been low, because the screen went black after about 5 minutes. When I plugged it back in to use the navigation system, it will not turn on. The cigarette lighter is working, because it works for my phone charger. Any suggestions? I depend on my GPS in my job (real estate), and I'll try anything : ) Thanks!

my 340 wont charge from the car charger , it is fine from the usb .
The main fuse appears to be intact ? This is sounding like a common failing. I shall now try the reset and see as the cer jack is working fine .. Leo

I came here looking for solution and tried the "press eraser in bottom right corner and turn on" but didn't work for mine BUT if you look at the face plate (the part on the front that says "Garmin",) just under the word "Garmin" you see a small indent in the plastic, useing your finger nail, gently pull upwards and the face plate will come up. Also, be gentle while pulling the face plate being careful not to break it. ( I advise that you use your nail and not anythng that might scratch the plastic if you are intending on returning the unit, cause they may suggest that you tampered with it and that "voids the warrenty") Anyway, look at the USB plug (above the ON button on the side) and you see a tab, press it and the unit will reset.

Seems to me that with all the problems Garmin has had with their units freezing up that I should have found this solution on the garmin site! To think that there are people who will throw there unit away because of this problem OR who will pay 150.00 bucks to get it fixed through Garmin.

I called Garmin for the same problem. They told me the cigarette lighter really just runs the unit, but doesn't fully charge the battery. They told me to hook the unit up to my computer with the UBS wire that came with it and it should be fully charged after 10 hours. They were right. Now I have four green bars instead of one and no "low battery" message.

That should solve your problem.

My 330i unit won't hold a charge. Bought a new 12 v charger and new fuse -still the same agh!!! What is the cure? Does the internal battery have a useful (and limited) life? Would an A/C charger do the trick? If so, I can use that in car w/12V inverter plugged into cig lighter....????

Does the charging symbol come up when you plug it in? If not it's either a broken charger (try diffferent one) or a broken charing port. If they don't give you a new one under warranty, are third party Garmin repair services that will fix it for cheap. Also, I found an DYI GPS repair guide, so you can do it yourself too, not that difficult.

I was able to charge it using my pc usb but even after that it is not charging in the vehicle. Think there is some problem with the cable or the cradle. Thanks!!

I just pooped off the front face, which is the light grey trim around the screen, very easy to do, hit the reset button and good to go. Thanks folks!

I contacted Garmin by e-mail and phone. The person on the phone suggested I need a a new cradle and sent me one. The e-mail suggested I plug it into my usb port of the computer. When I did it charged. I was also told to take the face plate off and press the reset button. The folks at germin were very nice and helpful I spoke to Garmin again and they let me warranty the C330 They told me to put the charged Garmin on the old cradle which I did and the fully charged Garmin read low battery. When the New cradle arrived free of charge I put on the new cradle, plugged it in and it works better than new

Thanks guys for your inputs. I nearly bought another GPS had I not found this site.

I had the same issue. My Garmin c340 suddenly powers on and off with or without the car power adapter connected. I tried the reset button under the faceplate as suggested here and charged it through my PC with my USB to PC cable. It started working again.

Then, I used it for a while using its own battery. Then, I attached it to the car power adapter and powered it off. It's charging again. It appears that the car power adapter can not charge the GPS when the battery level of the GPS is very low.

You can also use the USB to PC cable in your car. Just buy a car power adapter with USB input.

Hope this helps.

My Garmin c340 has won't turn on, screen is completly dark unit is charged

I has the same problem with a streetpilot 540.. It wouldn't turn on, even once charged. There was no reset button under the serial number. However, prise off the grey plastic square plate on the front panel which goes around the screen. ( there's even a little space for your fingernail under the Garmin logo). The reset button is under that plate. Press that with a screwdriver then turn on. My unit turned on once reset.

Charging unit with AC adapter

I have a 100v A/C power / charger unit for my garmin C340 GPS that I use to charge my Garmin's battery every day. I can use thj adapter to run the GPS, or just turn it off and let it charge the GPS. But it connects dirctly to the Garmin GPS unit, not to the cradle like the Cigarrette lighter unit does. .

Garmin c340 went black and can't get it working

The battery was completely dead. I must not have had the cord plugged in to my lighter, or maybe it wasn't sitting properly on the cradle, and it was running on battery power. I found that when I charged it by the computer, it was ok. It is working with no problems, now.

Garmin c340 gps freezes up

Avoid buying Garmin GPS. Their units have a non user replaceable battery that last about 2 years. After that, you have to send the unit to Garmin to replace the battery and be hit with at least $150 plus shipping. Possibly more if they need to fine tune something else. Look at other brands with easier battery replacement such as Sony, Navigon, etc. Garmin is a total rip off.
