I have a Toshiba Mod. 50HZ72...The Blue lamp appears to be tweaked too far to the right. I t wont go back to the left to line up with cross. Can it be adjusted below? Manually?

You are correct..it is a 50H72..dunno where I got the Z from. Anyhow, yes, I would love instruction on how to proceed with repair as well as an inexpensive place to obtain repair parts.I am familiar with soldering, but any additional tips/tricks you may have are welcomed. I always say, your never too old to learn.

I presume the actual model number is 50H72 not 50HZ72----the 50H72 and most of these sets use two of the STK-392-110 CONVERGENCE IC chips. If Blue is skewed (or red) and will not move in some direction one of the two chips and or one or more of the 1.8 ohm protect resistors around them are bad. Both chips and any bad resistors need to be replaced and the set adjusted. Considering you can buy a pair of the chips on Ebay for less than 14 dollars plus shipping, if you or someone you know can do this you can save the set and a lot of money. Including other things you will need the total parts cost should be under 30 dollars total. Two things are involved in this repair: Gaining access to the chips and unsoldering them and replacing them. The chips are on two large metal heat sinks with fins and usually are in the middle of the set side by side. they are black in color with 18 pins each and about 2 1/2 wide by 1 1/2 tall and will have the full STK number printed on the front of them in white letters. Most shops are going to get 300 or more for this kind of repair and it should be able to be done right in your home--takes about 1 hour--I have done hundreds of them here. If you or someone you know can do it I can give you general instructions and tell you what you will need and where to get the chips on Ebay. I have helped several people here do this and almost all of them were able to do it. I will if you attempt it be here if you have problems or need further help. If you want the instructions and my solution here has helped you rate this solution as I do this here for FREE. SD TECH

FIRST: the place I buy parts from is on Ebay. Select advanced search, then on the left search by seller......look for sewsales55--this is a company in Maryland called Suburban Electronics-fast shipper and good seller--Jim is the head guy there.

The repair consists of two parts. First you are going to have to gain access to the chips---most of these sets you are going to have to get the entire chassis unbolted so the bottom of all the boards faces the back of the set--you will have to unplug some plugs and remove some wires from ties that hold them--usually you are going to have to get about 4 plugs free to have enough room to work.

Use liquid solder flux on the 18 pins on each chip before you unsolder them--most of the time in this set they will be on large metal heat sinks near the middle of the boards at the back of the set. The real battle is getting at them. with the flux applied you unsolder all 18 pins on each chip AND YOU WILL FIND FOUR LARGE PINS SOLDERED IN FOR THE HEAT SINKS.

The idea is to get the chips unsoldered and the heat sinks free--you will then be able to pull the heat sinks with the chips attached out of the board. This is the hard part. You install the two new chips with heat sink compound on them--if you need explanation let me know. the hard part is when you install the new ones--best way is to do the one towards the front of the set first--18 pins and four pins for the heat sink--very important all the pins on the chips are perfectly straight. Once you get one chip and heat sink in you lower the board and solder the pins that hold the heat sink in (four pins) you repeat this with the second chip and then carefully solder all the pins on both chips--make sure you solder all of them and do not short any--

When you have the two chips removed check all the dark gray resistors around them--they are all 1.8 ohm and should read like a fuse--very common for one to be open and look pefect.

if you find any bad ones replace them--if you do not you will still have a convergence problem--a bad chip will open or destroy one of them instantly.

If you get this far--turn the set on and see what you have--go into the customer menu and adjust the convergence there. if it looks ok you are done--if you want a finer adjustment let me know and i will give you instructions on how to get into the TEch menu for adjustment all over the screen.
do not hesitate if you have questions to let me know.

I have a Sony KDP-57WS550 TV that has a convergence problem. Based on the symptoms, I'm not sure whether to indict the convergence ICs. In the convergence mode, I can move the red (and blue) crosses,...

With your TV in setup Use a small magnet to "move" the non converged Red, Blue, or, Green color lines "crosses" (each CRT will need to be adjusted in turn) by moving the magnet close to the offending Red, Blue or,Green color CRT yoke or, tube while observing the movement of the CRT color line "cross" in a mirror ( try several places near the tube and, several strengths of magnets:) a refrigerator sheet magnet works well (you can cut these with a scissors to make a better fit or, apply less magnetic "pull." by making them smaller (you may need more than one magnet per tube to fix each CRT's convergence) When you have each CRT tube's convergence right, apply some clear silicone adhesive to the magnet and, permanently affix the magnet to the now "fixed" CRT tube exactly where you placed the magnet to obtain the best convergence on the CRT.
(Do not adjust the "Green" CRT unless you must, as it is used as the color line to adjust other lines to)

TOSHIBA 50" MOD.#50HP66 appears vertical

A part of the buffer memory from the image processor is faulty and all the data stored in there is corrupted, hence the lines you see.
What you must replace is the board on which the processor is situated, the logic one. Here it is

You can adjust the lines and make them straight. You can also in the same process, make them line up.
1. With the TV on, press the mute button the remote control so that you have picture but no sound.
2. With remote in one hand (holding it as far from the TV as you can but still be able to reach the TV with your other hand), press and hold the mute button again, with the other hand, using the control panel underneath the screen, press the menu button on the TV set.
You will notice an "S" on the screen on the right hand side about 2/3 from the left, halfway up the screen (If you did this right).
This means you are in service mode.
With the remote, curse right only once and you will have some information displayed in the upper left. The top line is Item, the one underneath is Data.
Press "7." This will display the built in cross hatch pattern. You can move the line around with the directional circle located at the center of the remote. Using the "3" button, you can decide which color to move. To move the curser to a new location, The number pad doubles as a direction key pad. (2-up), (4-left), (6-right), (8-down). To simplify the process, you can eliminate the red or blue or green lines and only focus on one color at a time. "0" will shut on/off the green line. "100 button" will shut on/off the red line. "CH RTN or Enter will shut on/off the blue line.
"7" will exit the process as well as get you there.
Power off when you are done and turn back on.
Repeat as needed.

43H70 Blue Convergence out of line and will not line back up

If the blue colors will not line up, and the blue appears to sag inward from one or more sides, then you can bet that one of your convergence IC's has either cracked loose or burned out. The IC should be resoldered or replaced and the convergence realigned by someone experienced with projection TV convergence circuits.
