Slow to heat up

Most likely your ignitor is going bad. This is the part that glows before the gas comes on. It has to draw the proper amperage to allow the gas in the oven to light and burn. Some ignitors glow and look good but are not drawing enough amperage for the gas valve to open, with the problem you are describing.

Very fragile part, easy to break,
good luck.....

Oven takes forever to pre-heat and then doesn't keep the temp constant. turning on stove burner helps sometimes, and sometimes it works fine. do we need new thermostat or...? not sure if i have right...

Very common problem, I would replace the oven ignitor first as they get weak with time and cause intermittent burner lighting. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists

Oven takes a long time to heat up.

Hello. To go 12 years without issues is excellent. Now however you will have to make a decision to repair or replace. Be sure to get a firm estimate before you repair and compare that to the cost of replacement.

here is what may be causing your problem:

Usually when an oven won't bake, it's because the bake igniter is weak or burned out. The igniter is a small, round or rectangular device, that's about 1 inch by 4 to 8 inches. It's near the burner itself.

The burner is the tube-type device the gas flows through before it's ignited. It has many small holes on the sides to let the gas, when ignited, form a long, low flame. If the igniter is weak, if it glows red but doesn't get hot enough, or if it's burned out, the gas doesn't flow to the burner and the burner won't ignite. If this is the problem, you may need to replace either the igniter or the gas safety valve. Usually the igniter is to blame.

Other causes Other reasons that your oven may not bake are:

  • The clock settings are incorrect (if you have timed baking or a self-cleaning oven).

  • The thermostat is defective.

  • The safety valve that prevents accidental gas flow is defective.

  • The selector switch is defective.

Oven takes FOREVER to pre-heat

You probably have a bad heating element. Trip the breaker and make sure that all power is removed from the stove/oven. Remove the element, and test it for continuity. If it tests open, obtain a replacement from an appliance parts supply house. If it tests good, you should suspect either a bad switch or thermostat.

Pre heat problem

The good news is it does heat up. So that means the controls are ok and the safety valve is ok. So what could be causing the problem? A weak ignitor! The ignitor must draw 3 amps or better to properly open the safety valve. One way for the layman to tell for sure is to look at the ignitor. It should be very bright. If it is dim it is bad. Replace it.

It take a long time for my gas range to pre-heat

the oven flame seems to be to low, that flame most be at least 2 inches long. not counting the sides of flame from one side of the burner to the other, but from where the flame begins at the metal of the burner.

Gas oven makes a fluttering sound when pre-heating and cooking

This is most often due to the ignitor bar aging. With time it draws less current and does not hold the regulator valve open all the way. You can confirm that the regulator is OK if the broiler works. Replacement for nearly all of these ovens is a universal part, about $35 at appliance parts stores, takes 5-15 minutes to change (depending on whether you need to pull the oven out to get to the connector).

Viking Range

I'm having a similar problem. I don't know the exact fix yet, I'm just starting to research. Check this link:
It sounds like the ignitors are suspect. This may be a weak component for Vikings. This link recommends a Maytag replacement part.
