Western Digital Passport 160 external drive hangs system

I have a Compaq Pressario laptop running XP with a powered Belkin USB 2.0 Notebook Card. The drive was working and I used it to back up my computer prior to formatting my internal drive. Since my reinstall, when attempting to use the Passport drive the system recognizes the drive, doesn't show any problems in Device Manager and I can see all my files and directories on the drive however after a few seconds the computer freezes. I have waited an hour or so to see if the system comes back but it doesn't. The only option at that point is to crash the system and reboot. I have tried reinstalling the notebook card and can use my wireless mouse through the card. Belkin is not returning my requests for help. Any ideas?

Re: Western Digital Passport 160 external drive hangs...

The drive works (I can access the files and the system does not lock up) on the USB1 port that came with the computer. I dont't have access to another laptop so got another Belkin card, uninstalled the drivers and then installed the new card. When trying the drive and also a usb memory stick the system continued to lock up.

Re: Western Digital Passport 160 external drive hangs...

My first suggestion is to try plugging the drive to one of the USB ports on the notebook and not to the ones on the card. Otherwise, try the drive on another computer to see if it's the drive. Then my next suggestion would be to try your USB card in someone else's notebook.

WD external HDD my passport 500 Gb . It's not correctly installed into my PC - PC can't find driver. System Windows XP

Maybe it's a power issue. Try a shorter usb cord or try a different usb port. If you are using an usb hub, try to connect the hard disk straight to the pc.

I tried to format my 500gb WD passport essential with exfat using windows 7 for my mediastar pvr . Now neither pvr or windows 7 can see the harddrive

Windows 7 does _NOT_ support 'exfat' drives, as you have found out.
You can "format" the drive, to use 'FAT32' or 'NTFS' file-systems.

Harddrive not being acknowledged by laptop

This is a hard one, as 7 is so new. But it sounds like the very next thing to do is to plug the drive into another computer to see if the drive is working properly. If it works well, make sure that your drive is not trying to grab a drive letter that is already being used by another device. Do a search on the MS website for known issues and instructions on how to check for drive letter management issues. Good luck.

Western digital passport i/o device error

90% of the time this is a power problem. The USB port on the computer can not supply enough watts. Use an external USB hub that has a 5V power supply.

Hi, I have a couple of external drives WD, of which one is My Book 500 GB , and the other a Passport portable 320 GB . Every time I Try to transfer file to/from any of the usb drives I get my system hang...

OK, so you have a set of files on your system in a folder that you will use as a test for the copying.
These files will copy ok locally on the internal HDD from folder to folder.
(trying to rule out an internal file error or corruption preventing copy).

Check Disk the System Drive.

Check under device manager if anything is sharing the IRQ with the USB port and try and move it and/or disable it for testing.

Can you full format the external USB drive OK say under Fat32 and NTFS On This System.
Run a Full Check Disk of the USB drive with allow fixes.

Are the USB drives self powered (mains/psu) or USB powered ?
Try self powering drive if available or use a USB piggy back which allows utilising power from two usb's for the one drive.

Default the system bios and do not overclock.
Have you tried alternative system board memory ?
Check the board manufacturer for a Bios update - it maybe a known issue.

I have a WD Passport drive that I want to use through a Targus mini USB hub. The Passport drive has power, but it will not install through the hub. Apparently wants a driver and apparently they don't have...

The reason your full sized drive works fine and the passport doesn't is that the full sized drive has it's own power supply and only uses the USB for data transfer. The Passport drive requires much more power from the USB to spin up, so, if you want to run it through the USB hub at the very least you will need to replace the USB hub with a powered one.

As for a driver, you don't need one to use the passport on XP that's why you can't find one but the Passport does require a dedicated port(2 for Amperage on some systems) or will need to be plugged into a powered hub or it simply won't get enough juice to fire up. That is the reason it won't show up.

In short, buy a powered hub, or plug it in direct. Nothing else is likely to work.

Hope this helps figure it out

I have the 80GB WD passport and it suddenly stopped working one day.  The unit lights up but nothing else.  Finally I cracked the case open and found, as I suspected, that the drive is simply a SATA laptop drive with a SATA-to-USB conversion card built in.  I suspected that the card was **** so I disconnected it and used a USB hard drive adapter ( and I can read/write to the drive just fine.  Best part is that the adapter I use has its own power supply so I'm not pulling juice through the USB cable for a SATA drive.
Even though mine "works" again I don't recommend these drives to anyone.  They're just not sturdy enough or well designed.
