Question about HP DVD 740VI 16X16 Dual Layer LightScribe DVDRW Blk RTL (HPDVD704VI) Burner
I have burned successfully burned projects on this drive before with no problems at all, but now when I try to, it doesn't even appear to see the media in the drive. The light comes on on the drive, but I don't hear it spin up like normal. I can burn CDs with no problems at all, but when it comes to DVDs, it stops seeing them. I even tried a game that was on DVD media with the same result, it didnt even acknowledge that the DVD was in the drive. I have updated the firmware, uninstalled, and reinstalled the drive, and the software. I use Nero to burn my compilations on DVD and have done so for a long time. I have never had this problem until a few months ago. To my knowledge, there has been no hardware or software changes. I have run adware and virus scanners just to be sure, and have read a lot on this problem with other people with the same drive, and same problem but to no avail, I have not seen a fix to this problem. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
You guys are crazy, another person trying to send someone to a repair guy to make money off us when in fact it would be cheaper just to buy a new one. I have the same issue with the same model 740b and this is driving me crazy I have been to a 100 different post andI will tell you what no one has a clue what they are talking about. Oh, restart the system upgrade your firmware, delete your reg file, its all BS. I have did everything in the book and this is what I have come up with. My drive reads some dvd disc I have created but any ISO or Auto play disc it doesnt even see it just keeps trying to load and thats it. So in my opinion HP or Compaq sent a update that did not require you to accept or approve and it updated the firmware with some info about allowing to use writen ISO or autoplay disc. Because it would seem to help with the cutting down of pirated software but the only issue is that if the software is an individuals and they copied it for their own use, who are they to intefere with our equipment. I may be wrong but it just seems kind of funny that every one is stating that this all happened around the same time. So in closing if you dont know the remedy do not suggest to send to a repair shop because you are an idiot then.

CORRECT ANSWER: HP LightScribe 740b is a LEMON!
Google the words LIGHTSCRIBE and LEMON, see how many results you get from others (including myself) having the same problem.
The drive is a lemon, HP ripped a lot of people off with a drive that is the equivalent of a \'72 Ford Pinto. The best solution I can offer is to get on Youtube and look up a video showing how to remove the Lightscribe laser and turn it into a neat burning laser. You can even mod it into a toy pistol to make a ray gun. ;D I would imagine about 20 of these lasers all mounted together would make a damn fine ray gun indeed.
I\'m sorry your drive fizzled, but all of them did, so you\'re not alone.
HP Lightscribe 740b is a LEMON, like most other HP products.

the problem you encountered with your DVD writer mostly occurs when the lens inside the DVD writer is faulty. My advice for you is that you disconnect the writer and take it to a qualified personnel for repairs or replacement of the lens.

make sure all the cords are hooked up to it properly in the computer case and if they are hooked up tight and none are loose make sure you have music/dvd codecs on your computer get a codec pack and then it should write a cd like normal for a codec pack just go to google and download one doesnt matter what one

i think you,ve hit the nail-on-the-head.
The laser has to power up highrer to write a DVD, or ocassionally have a dual laser. 1 for read/write CD. And 1 For Read/Write DVD.
Certain cd roms, only use CD- media. it,s probably worth checking which media is supported by the drive.
Also check the drives aren,t conflicting, on the same ide channel, sometimes swapping channels, ide primary/secondary can help, or swiitching Master/Slave/cable select jumpers on the drives Themselves.
