Power supply stops charging battery until battery is completely drained. Laptop doesn't run off power supply during this time. Power supply is working, I've checked it with volt meter.  Rebooting doesn't help.

Thanks j-cker915. Can you tell me what to look for? I'm a communications technician, and my son is studying to be a Med-Tech(he's pretty good with the soldering iron) I think between the two of us, we can manage to do the repair. This laptop is long out of warranty.
What does the micro switch look like, and where is it located?
    I appreciate the help.

There is a micro switch inside of your laptop that sounds like it has gone. happens to alot of laptops your best bet is to check your garantee if its still indate id send it back because its nearly inposible to fix yourself unless your really good with a soldering iron.

  • Anonymous Nov 29, 2009

its hard to say where exactly it is, depending on the board to, maybe there is some where you can get the board diagrammes for it. normally its a little yellow box close to where the power suplly plugs into the board. really is not easy to remove them and to resolder them, i dont even knwo where to get this micro switch, but its a commen thing to go in laptops. what ive done before is had a look at the switch and there is a number or name on them, search it on google and you can fidn the company that makes these switches, with my luck i requested a free sample of this switch and got it for nothing 3 of them so had a few spare if i burnt the odd one with soldering iron. hmm i think myself best bet is to look out for a secound hand laptop on ebay for parts dosnt have to be exact model but close enough. and take the micro switch from that one into yours. the switch turns on to chrage when power is pluged in and tells laptop to use main power, it also siwtches back to battery when wire is removed, i forget even the name to this switch buit all i can tell you normally they are a little yellow box close to the power point on laptop, about the sixe of a bean hehe closest thing i can think off. hope this helps

Plug off the power adapter and use the laptop until the battery is completely drained. To drain the battery faster, run several programs at once and keep the contrast of your screen to its highest levels. Turn off all power-saving features as well. Turn off sleep mode.

Make sure that the battery is totally drained by waiting for your laptop to shut off or go into sleep mode automatically because of very low battery charge.

Plug the power adapter again and charge the battery again completely. Once this is done, restore the power-saving features and adjust the contract settings of your screen to normal.

How to increase your Laptop?s Battery Life?

Information:
With the rise in laptop sales it is essential for laptop buyers to make sure they use their laptop batteries to the fullest and also make sure they can achieve the highest performance with the available battery. Generally most laptops claim to have 4-6 hours of battery life but in real it comes to 50% of the promised backup time because of many factors like heavy laptop usage while on battery backup, running USB Based gadgets, CD/DVD ROMs etc. You also need to make sure about some battery life saving tips because the laptop batteries generally have a life of around 1000 recharge cycles. Here is a list of some essential tips which can almost double your laptop battery life.
Screen brightness:
Almost all laptops come with the ability to dim the screen brightness. Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance. The display system takes 50% of your available battery and lower brightness would ensure you more battery life.
Power Cord:
Recharge your laptop using the power cord/adapter provided by the laptop dealer and don’t use any other local cord because they can decrease the life of your battery.
Remove your batteries When not in Use:
If you don’t use your laptop for a continuous period its recommended to remove your batteries completely from the laptop and add it back when you plan to use it. This is because laptop batteries have a limited lifetime and its generally 1000 charge cycles after which they stop offering complete backups. Even if it is not in use, the battery still drains, so you should completely remove it and store in a cool place and at a 40% charge rather than 100% charge.
Background Processes:
When you are running your laptop on batteries, avoid heavy multitasking, because processor and ram will then need more power thus making your battery drain further.
Wi-Fi:
Wi-Fi should be turned off when not in use because it drains your laptop battery in search of signals and wireless router. You can use the hardware switch available on the laptop to disable your wifi or disable it from the Network Connections option available under your Control Panel.
Disable Aero Glass:
Disable Aero Glass Feature which comes preinstalled in Windows Vista. You need to right click on your Desktop > Preferances > View Colour > Appearance > Classic Appearance and Windows Basic graphical interface > Ok , this way you can get the classic appearance which has less resource using features and helps you use less battery power.
Heat Control:
Your laptop operates more efficiently when it’s cooler. Clean out your air vents with a cloth or keyboard cleaner.
Optimize Power Options:
Go to ‘Power Options’ in your windows Control Panel and set it up so that power usage is optimized (Select the ‘max battery’ for maximum effect).
Avoid Multitasking:
Do one thing at a time when you’re on battery. Rather than working on a spreadsheet, letting your email client run in the background and listening to your latest set of MP3’s, set your mind to one thing only. It is important to note that it is fine running an idle program at the background but if the program is constantly doing some work like downloading or extracting a Zip file, this is when the battery drains out.
External Drives:
USB devices (including your mouse) drain down your laptop battery. Remove or shut them down when not in use. It goes without saying that charging other devices (like your iPod) with your laptop when on battery, is a like putting a wood on fire.
Battery Recharge:
Do not leave a charged battery dormant for long periods of time. Once charged, you should at least use the battery once every two to three weeks(2 weeks is recommended). Also, do not let a Li-On battery completely discharge.
Hibernate Not Standby:
Although placing a laptop in standby mode saves some power and you can instantly resume where you left off, it doesn’t save anywhere as much power as the hibernate function does. Hibernating a PC will actually save your PC’s state as it is, and completely shut itself down. Settings up Automatic Hibernate feature to make sure the laptop automatically saves all your running documents and applications, and hibernates when you are not using the laptop for a given amount of time is very important.
Clean Battery:
Clean your battery’s metal contacts every couple of months with a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol. This keeps the transfer of power from your battery more efficient.

Hi, I have a 1.5kva cyberpower inverter installed but it doesn't charge the batteries even after displaying the input voltage on screen. It will just drain the batteries and then shut down the output.

Unless a battery is completely drained, over time it begins charging less and less. If your laptop seems to run for less and less time each time you unplug it from the wall, you probably need to reset it. This is a simple process.

Disable all power-saving and automatic shutdown programs or routines on your computer. If your laptop power plan dims the screen or goes into sleep mode after a few minutes of idle time, disable that. Unplug the laptop's AC adapter cord. Drain the laptop battery. You can just use the laptop until it shuts itself off, or you can wander away and come back when it's gone dark. Make sure that you do not turn it off or allow itself to shut down to conserve power; you want it to run out of power entirely. If you happen to be in a hurry, feel free to exhaust the computer more quickly by playing a 3D graphics-intensive computer game or watching a bit of online video content. Plug the AC adapter back in and wait for the charging indicator light for your laptop to come back on. Once you see that the laptop has begun charging again you are free to do whatever you like, so long as you do not turn the computer off until the battery is fully charged.

If the power supply does not run the laptop without the battery, then the problem is the jack in the laptop, over time the plug breaks free of the motherboard causing intermittent operation or no power. If the power supply runs the laptop without the battery, it is the charging circuits on the motherboard that is the issue.

I had a GPU issue so i searched in google to find a solution and i found a solution it was needs to open the laptop , the motherboard the GPU problem solved now but there's a new problem that i didn't have...

Hello,

I would check to make sure the AC adaptor connection on the motherboard was not damaged when you opened the pc. ( I have done that a few times.) I'm uncertain of what you have done to solve the problem. Since you have the new battery, again try to charge the battery. when it show the charge is complete, let the pc run until it goes off, when it does, keep powering your pc on until it will no longer power on. (You want to make sure the battery is completely drainned.) Once complete, try plugging the AC to your pc and monitor the charge. You may need to let the pc charge for at least 2 hours before powering the pc on.

Good Luck
