I can't figure out how to program my Radio Shack Pro-97 scanner!

If you can't program the unit using the instructions in the owner's manual, there's no way anyone can post a workable answer for you here. I suggest that you join a Yahoo users' group for the PRO-97. That way you can pose a problem to a group of users, plus get one-on-one assistance in programming your scanner.

Won't trunk track. Searches frequencies, but will not scan talk groups.

This radio will only work on analog trunked systems, if it is a digital or P25 system, you need to upgrade to a digital scanner like the PRO96, or newer.

How to program a radio shack pro 163 police scanner

The 163 is a trunking scanner, so programming instructions are long and detailed, and they vary for each type of trunking system. Programming instructions are best explained in the factory operating manual. If you don't already have it, you can download/print the manual here:

You may also want to join a users group for the 163. Check Yahoo or just Google PRO-163.

For a comprehensive database of active frequencies and systems in your area, visit:

The site also has information that explains the workings of trunking systems, links to users groups, and a lot of other useful scanning information.

800 MHz frequency Mode problem

You have to program it TRUNKING mode when you enter the control channel frequencies. It is decoding okay as the MO shows motorola control channel and +DG means digital decoded and an OPEN group. You need to press the 'trunk' button everytime a talkgroup comes up that you want it to remember for future 'closed' group (-DG) talk groups. I suggest you go to 'RadioReference DOT com" and there are many forums there for your radio, as well as one or two YAHOO GROUPS specifically for your scanner. 73's

Pro-164 scanner stops receiving when Motorola talk-ids are progra

I had to buy the Radio Shack USB cable 20-047 and install
the driver for it and then I downloaded a program named
"Win97" from the website as listed
on page 21 of the Pro-164 manual. The cable costs
$34.99 and with tax you are looking at about $37.88.

The "Win97" software must be registered for it to work
after a 30-day free trial period. That's approx $25.00.

This is the ONLY WAY to go !! You put in everything
on the software GUI and then upload it to the PRO-164.
Works like a champ !!!!!!

Pro-97, only want to listen to EMS

Not being completely familar with the radio system you use... i would presume that your dispatch uses a subaudio tone to "turn off" the squelch on the radio you use as an emt.... if you know that tone make sure it is turned on for the scanner on the frequency that you are using. i presume the id numbers are specific to areas of the city.

Trunking frequencies

Did you initialize your scanner? If you did, then you also deleted your trunking banks (1-9). These are the banks that store the channels that were inputted by you. The scanner will display "All channels locked out," when all of these banks are empty. You may have to put the frequencies in again. I suggest using win97. There is a 30day trial. This is the only program that I know of that will work with this scanner.

The pre-programmed channels should still be there. If you press and hold the scan button for a couple of seconds you should see the signal stalker running.

Good luck.

Scanner not working

Did you use a software program or have radio shack program the scanner for you? If so, check to make sure the banks were selected in the software to be enabled. I assume the your scanner shows 0123****** Now to manually select banks, simply press the number for the selected bank to both select and de-select as warrented. When you press 4, bank 4 will now be scanned. Also, should you press 1, bank 1 will not be scanned.
