It turned a few times and stopped then I turned it by hand and heard a click. Then I could hear gears turning underneath, but it wouldn't turn once started again on its own. could it be a drive gear or belt is stripped or a pin out of place?
Turntable turns, but weak. Is the access at the bottom? Can I take the bottom off? and if so, can I adjust it?Turntable turns, but weak. Is the access at the bottom? Can I take the bottom off? and if so, can I adjust it?

there is a motor under the underside of the microwave these motors can clog up. try turning the motor to by hand a few times so it makes a werring sound. if no sound its the slow gear in the motor broken and will need a new motor fitting.
inside the cabinet, there is (usually) a belt that turns that gear, you will have to unplug the unit and take off the cover to get at it, probably has some grit in the belt or such, also look for missing teeth
Sounds like the turntable drive coupling is broken. In the bottom of the microwave where your turntable is, underneath that is a small drive coupling that the motor shaft pushes into. if the motor doesn't turn or the coupling, which commonly has a D shape shaft to keep it from slipping, is broken, the tray will not turn. One quick test it to remove your tray and see if you can turn the coupling easily by hand, if you can you probably have a broken drive coupling. The turntable motor is very difficult to turn by its shaft. so if it turns easily it is probably a broke coupling. NEVER force your turntable around by hand or you can break that coupling.
Remove the turntable plate from the oven. Put a cup of water inside the oven, away from the turntable drive gear. Turn the oven on and look through the door to see if the drive gear is turning. If not, then the motor is probably defective and needs to be replaced.
It sounds like you have a jamming turntable motor.
The turntable system
consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers,
and the tray.
You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should
sound when you rotate it by hand.
If
yours won't rotate
or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or
plastic coupler.
To
replace either, you need to unplug power, then remove the bottom cover
of the oven. You can usually find

The following parts are in the turntable system: The turntable motor, underneath the floor of the microwave; the turntable coupler, which is like a small plastic piece; the turntable support, either a three-legged or circular piece with wheels; and the glass turntable tray.
It sounds like maybe your turntable support is missing?

I would suspect either door switches or an intermittent control circuit board, either of which can be repaired.
Opening the door while cooking (without first hitting the STOP pad) is the primary cause of door switch failure over time.
I have a text file on my site called "doorsw.txt" which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems. You can find the file via a Google search. It will help you check and replace the door switches if you or an able friend is so inclined.
In some cases, the problem is a bad connection or a bad relay on the control board. That's something we see fairly often, and we repair them for only $32.50 nationwide.
