Question about Garmin StreetPilot c550 GPS Receiver

Software Update - Non-working Garmin Lock

Ok, this is very complex and I am waiting for Garmin to get back to me on this, but I thought I would put it out here and see if anyone has any suggestions.
I updated the software on my C550 from 5.7 to 6.0. Since then, the unit would "flash" white for a second intermittently, and it lost the ability to repeat the distance when the lower right button was pressed. I spoke to Garmin, and they told me they had never heard of this, and after I asked, told me how to re-install version 5.7. I did this. Unfortunately, they did NOT tell me this would wipe out my favorites, just like a Master Reset which I did not want to do. The flashing seems to have stopped, but the unit still will not repeat the distance. It DOES say it initially. Further, the Garmin Lock no longer functions. The unit comes right on. I have tried to turn the lock on and off, and the unit asks me to set the PIN, which I do. It then asks me to set the Security Location, which again, I do. It immediately goes back to the Garmin Lock screen, as though it worked, but when the unit is powered off and on, it comes right on without asking for a PIN. Anyone have any experience with this? I have since reset, Master Reset and reinstalled all software.

This kinda fixed itself. The Garmin Lock came back when I plugged the unit back into the car, and with 6.0 reinstalled is back to flashing and still won't speak distance. Garmin has sent me two replies, one stating that they don't support "older" software and the other stating there is no way to get the favorites back (but they did not address the flashing or loss of spoken distance). It seems to be back to where it was prior to my reinstallation of the old software, minus all my favorites.

Thanks for the attempt, but I routinely erase the recent selections. Besides, when I re-loaded the previous version, it acted similar to a Master Reset, which removed all of that. I did the Master Reset later as well, so the favorites are good and gone. What I remembered I reinstalled, and as I recall what was in there on a per case basis, I reinstall further. Thanks again, though.

Check to see if "Recent Selections" contain any of your favorites. You can then rebuilt Favorites from the Recent Selections. If the Recent Selections contain any of your favorite just select it and then select Save.

Does your Garmin Nuvi 265W Freeze at Loading Maps?
Does it lock up or stop working?

This tip will describe how to perform a hard reset of the device, and how to backup your 'Favorites' in case the hard reset erases them. The next step in fixing your Nuvi when it doesn't start properly is to update its system software using Garmin WebUpdater.

A hard reset (or Clear All User Data) has been known to resolve unit quirks and strange behavior. It's generally recommended to perform it after a firmware update but is not required by any means. However, if you're seeing quirks and strange behavior with your unit after the firmware update, it is a good idea to do a hard reset of the unit.

Backup and Restoration Procedure for Favorites:

The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.

  1. From the Nuvi drive, copy '/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx' to a backup location on your computer.
  2. After the hard reset, copy your backed up 'current.gpx' from your computer back to the '/Garmin/GPX/' folder on the Nuvi, but be sure to rename it 'temp.gpx'.
  3. On the next power cycle, the Favorites will be read from 'temp.gpx' into the non-user accessible memory area on the Nuvi where they are actually stored.
Perform the Hard Reset:

*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit

  1. Power the unit off.
  2. Remove the battery and wait several minutes.
  3. Install the battery.
  4. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
  5. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?" prompt appears.
  6. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. This resets all your location settings and user preferences.

If possible after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.

You have now performed a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 265W GPS unit.

I hope that helps.

I want to update the software

Hello there,
Updating the garmin nuvi 205w is quite simple. All you need to do is to connect the device to the computer that you have the garmin nuvi software on,then you go to the website www.garmin.com then you select support, a list will pop up, with the information update the software, then you back up the software that is on it, then you update the OS to the latest version, then you wait for it to update. When you are through with updating the software, disconnect the device from the omputer and power it on.

I can not get Garmin Webupdater to update my Garmin..model 885T

There are two solutions to get your Garmin Nuvi 885T running smoothly again. I have posted detailed directions in the Tips section of this Fixya website. Follow these two links to find step by step instructions on how to perform both the hard reset and the software upgrade.

The software upgrade does run independently of the Webupdater, but in regards to your 'slow internet connection' the file size of this Garmin update is almost 50 Mb.

I hope that helps.

The detailed maps are "locked" all of a sudden!

If this is still happening then go to Kenwood direct, they supplied the unit with the pre loaded software and therefore they should deal with the problem as they are not supposed to lock the software. Kenwood if need be will contact Garmin for you. You may find that they have experienced this problem with other users too.

Update problem with Garmin Nuvi 255w

I had same problem. I called Garmin customer service who connected me to a computer rep. Garmin hooks with your computer that you have your Garmin plugged into. They can upload the proper software in no time at all.
The rep told me that after I updated my Garmin I might have turned off the unit before it completed updating the new software. You need to wait until the screen with "Where to?" appears.
It works great now. Prepare to wait on hold for a while. I waited just over an hour on Monday, their busiest day.

Repair Garmin street pilot 2720

i did 2 things, one of which solved the problem. i saw that lots of people were trying to fix this by addressing the cable and plug, but this was not fixing the issue. i began to clean the connectors (with fine sandpaper) but they looked ok anyway, and also the restart issue was not happening when the gps was in motion - it was also happening when everything was still, so the cable could not be the problem. the second thing i did was, i went to garmin.com and did a software update (not the maps) I just went here http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=931 and this thing did everything automatically. I just got back from a short 30 min trip and the unit did not reset itself anymore. I have to assume the problem was in the software. go to garmin.com and use the WebUpdater to update firmware and stuff on your gps. Oh, one thing i can't get it to work is the voice driving directions now, i'll try to fix that too, but for now i'm happy the unit does not reset itself anymore.
