Question about Kenmore 98702 Stacked Washer/Dryer

2 Answers

Dryer makes a loud squeaking/squealing noise while drying.

Our stackable dryer starts to squeak loudly after a few minutes and continues until the end of the cycle. This is so loud that you can hear it from outside. It seems to dry the clothes fine but the squealing and screeching is almost unbearable. Any solutions or suggestions? Thanks. Tracy Miller

hi we have a kenmore stackable. our dryer started out with the squealing noise for awhile, it stopped for a couple weeks now it has gone to a grinding noise, drying clothes fine but grinding untill the end of the cycle could that be the ball bearing.

If the dryer model number begins with 417, the drum is supported by a ball bearing in back, and a seal and glides up front. Often, the bearing will become very dry, either from years of use, or from excessive lint blowing up into the bearing. If the bearing isn't cracked or otherwise noticeably bad, you can usually solve the issue simply by lubing the bearing with a high temp grease. While the machine is apart...(a major pain in the butt), make sure to check the condition of the seal and glides on the front panel, and replace the belt if it looks at all cracked or frayed.
If this dryer is not a 417 and/or does not have a rear bearing, it's best to get a maintainance kit (belt, idler pulley and drum rollers) and install all the aforementioned parts, as they are the most likely source of screech. Also, check the motor by spinning the shaft manually with the belt off....if that is squeeking, it's motor
time.

Dan's comment is really helpful. Thank you. Is the bearing you are referring to under the dryer tub? Do I have to take out the tub to get to it? I have lubricated the area I can access through the panel but that is not really having any effect. I think I may be missing something but I can not figure out how to get the tub out of this particular kind of model

Loud squeaking dryer

I have one of these units. They are great appliances. What you have is a very common problem with these units, the drum support bearing is going bad. I think they make a repair kit, but it's a chore to get to. If you are mechanically inclined, you'll do fine. Just make sure you remember the order you took stuff off, and reverse it to get it all back together.

My stackable dryer (417.94702300) makes a clunking noise. We just got it (craigslist) and it happened the 1st time we turned it on. Sounds like we're trying to dry a shoe in there - it clunks in rhythm...

Extremely loud noise during spin cycle of my Neptune dryer--just started happening in the last month. The dryer is probably 7-8 years old, so it's not the newer Neptune model.

Noisy dryer......when engaged...making squeaking/squealing noise.

If the noise is like a shaking of rattling , like coins being shaked , then it is an object trapped inside the drum.

If instead the noise is a loud grinding , that may get louder on high speed, then it is usually a bad drum bearing.

If dryer is not cooling, check that the noise is not coming from the ventilation fan.

Rollers and belt tensioner can also make noise.

Dryer makes a loud noise then stops

If it stops running when hot it may be the motor. The belt or drum rollers would not stop it from running.
