Testing a compressor to makes sure its not grounded

I would like to test my refrigerator compressor to make sure it ok, i recently had the starter go on it and the starter is on order but i would like to know that that compressor is ok before installing the new starter . I have been told you can do this by simply testing it with an ohm meter, with that being said what type of reading should i be getting, should i just be checking for continuity or is there something else

The 3 terminals on the compressor should be like .........
Start { } Run

Common {

a)From Common to Start between 1-10??
b) From Common to Run between 1-10??
c) Start to run should be the added total of what a anb b was
ex. S to C = 5...... R to C = 3 ............S to R = 8

Then check with the ohm meter on its all it ohms scales for absolutely no continuity to ground ...check all the compressor terminals to a copper freon tube (dig the meter probe in the copper some to get good connection)

SOURCE: small refrigerator compressor overload relay cuts out

I am told if you measure two terminals and note the two with the highest resistance. Then measure each of the two terminals with the highest resistance to the common terminal they the two additional readings should read the same as the two terminals with the highest resistance when adding them together. If after adding the two there is more than 1/2 ohm difference one of the windings is shorted.

Disconnect and remove the relay and capacitor from compressor, sometimes located next to compressor in a casing.

You wills see 3 prongs coming out of compressor. 1 goes to ur start winding, 1 goes to ur run winding and the center goes to ur ground or COM

Place ur meter connector or prong on the start prong and the other on the ground (center prong) take note of the reading in OHMS for example 5 ohms.
Next place meter prong on run prong and the center ground prong agin. Take note of the reading in OHMS. Example 4 ohms

Next place meter prong on the start prong and the other on the run prong, now take note of the reading example 9 ohms. Now match the total of this ohms test with the total of ur two separate test. 9 ohms, if they match ur ok give or take 5 percent plus or minus. Makes a clicking sound about every 12 mins but is cooling okay and sounds normal


THE COMPRESSOR:
If you hear a clicking sound coming from the back of your refrigerator/freezer, then the problem is most likely the compressor, relay and or capacitor is overheating or not getting proper power and will not start.The compressor is the component on your refrigerator that allows your refrigerator to cool. If this component is not working properly your refrigerator will stop cooling. Most of the time the compressor is not the component that has failed.

To check ur compressor with multi meter:
Disconnect and remove the relay and capacitor from compressor, somes located next to compressor in a casing.

Started to be noisy when compressor starts up. Tried cleaning dusting motor area including fan. Seemed quieter but becoming noisy again

Compressor won't run. Can't determine where the power comes from. Please advise

Hi I have a Westinghouse 614 fridge/freezer compressor is not working and l found that starter relay was faulty changed it but still no go. there are two wires one blue and one white l believe blue was...


I believe the actual colors should be re for run windings and white for start capcitor and green or brown or black for ground.

AT TIMES YOU MAY HEAR THE COMPRESSOR CLICK OFF AND ON OVER AND OVER. Signs of a bad start relay or capacitor. Check with an OHMS meter for continuity (ohms) and voltage, capacitor can be checked for Microfares.

Fridge stopped working both freezer and fridge, Here clicking at compressor, compressor not starting, cooling fan and everything else OK, could it be the compressor or is there a chance the thermal switch...


This is a bad compressor, or overload-relay kit. Disconnect the power, remove the overload-relay from the compressor, and test the three compressor terminals for continuity . You should have continuity between each terminal, and you should not have continuity between any terminal and ground. If this tests ok, then replace the overload-relay kit. This is a common repair for me, and it is very rare for us to find a bad compressor, so you should be ok. If it is a bad compressor, and it is less than five years old, you have a five year sealed system warrantee, that will cover the repair cost. If it is over five years old, it is not worth repair. When you are done with the repair, make sure you install a 2000 joule or higher, surge protector to protect your refrigerator from this type of repair in the future. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists

Backside of motherboard fried near relay on ge


Good day,
The board could have simply failed. However, the compressor should be checked thoroughly before replacing it since it's pricey.
A service tech, would first test to make sure, none of the windings are grounded. This is done by removing the relay and overload mounted on the compressor, then checking each pin of the compressor to ground (bare copper tubing) with an ohm meter. Each pin should show near infinity.
Then he would connect a start cord designed specifically for compressor running, and run the compressor independent of the rest of the machine.
If it runs O.K. he would then test the overload and relay before calling the compressor O.K.

It has to be your call, as to how you want to proceed.
The price of the board being the big issue.

Compressor not coming on

Abnormal cooling in freezer/refrigerator


ok, this is insufficient air flow causing the uneven cooling. the fan that has stopped may be dead. you can test the motor with a multi meter and voltage needle. i would also preform a break point test on the thermostat as well. make sure the compressor and condenser are ok. if the noise is coming for the compressor, you may have a bad compressor unit.

Refrigerator issue with the starter


Sometimes when these relay fail (and they all do) they fail shorted (letting current flow from L1 to N) not open (not letting any current flow) and they may arc so bad that they destroy the compressor terminals. If the terminals arent destoyed then ohm out the compressor, make sure it isnt grounded and then replace the starter.
