Laptop just shutting down every 5 mins or so -- Just going power down and booting up until one waits -- Same issue in safe mode, on battrey, on power with abttrey disconnected, and even in bios mode. Bestbuy guy says motherboard is shorting on heat !!

  • Anonymous Nov 29, 2009

This an AMD Turion, so I though they normally run that hot. I have been having these issues from the very beginning ( intermittently with varying periods -- now it is too frequent 10 mins). Can I as a noivice do all the above ? Replace Fan, Heat Sink dust cleaning ? The problem has increased now it even shuts down in safe mode or when left in the Bios mode !!

Sounds like the CPU is overheating. Try cleaning with canned air. On the bottem of the laptop you can see a fan with laptop off and battery removed use a whole can of air to clean it. wait 5 min. replace battery and try normal start up. listen for the fan to come on if it doesn't the fan is bad and needs to be replaced
Hope this helps

When a computer/laptop shuts down and won't power up straight away and then able to boot up after the computer cools down, then this indicates a thermal overload problem.
This is usually caused by a faulty fan and or the heat-sink and fan is clogged with dust, therefore it doesn't cool the CPU and causes it to overheat and shutdown. If this is not fixed the eventually the CPU will fail.
Check the fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan. Check the heat-sink/fan and remove and vacuum the dust off these components.

My del studio laptop doesn't shut down

You could have a corruption in the script or a process that won't stop. Try holding down on the power button until the screen goes dark and all lights go out. That is a hard shut down without saving settings. After it shuts down (finally) power it back up. Hit the F8 key on your keyboard the moment your machine goes to the black screen before it can load windows. That is the safe mode. Move the highlight up to safe mode or safe mode with networking and allow it to continue to boot up. Then, when it's completed the process and windows displays that it is in safe mode, do a normal restart. That should resolve the issue.

Acer 8920 G restarts after 3 min and again shuts down

First make sure your fan is operating on your processor it takes about 3 mins for it to over heat and stop and shut itself down for safety to prevent burning up the processor.if its not this read on.
Also when you boot into safe mode then do a system restore to a date before the problem started. But first in safe mode run your antivirus scan to find something that is missed while being hid behind the operating system while functioning. JUST BOUGHT LAPTOP ON 2/22/11 AND TODAY THE SCREEN IS BLACK - G62-407DX AN HP WAS WAITING FOR FARMVILLE TO UPLOAD AND THEN NOTHING.STILL SOUNDS LIKE IT IS RUNNING WHEN SHUT.WHAT COULD THIS BE?

Hold down the power button until the laptop turns off. Wait 5 seconds and turn it on again. Do you see the slash screen as it powers up? Hopefully it will boot into the OS. If it's black the whole time, the video card may be dead. But if you do see a splash screen and it goes black after booting into the OS, you may have caught an infection. Try to boot into safe mode w/ networking and downloading scans to remove a possible infection. I use 3 scanners to remove infections. If the 3 do not clear it, the OS is hosed and needs to be wiped and reloaded. 3 scans: Combofix, SuperAntispyware and Malwarebytes. Good luck.

What to do if laptop screen is blank and the lapstop won't shut off

Try to unplug the power cable then flip the laptop over on its closed lid and on the back should be an access to the battery. Remove the battery for about 2 minutes replace the battery and power cable. It should reboot to a black white screen giving 3 choices. You'll have about 35 seconds before the computer auto selects safe mode. Go ahead enter safe mode after it completely boots in safe mode shut down computer completely, wait 30 seconds and hopefully it will start up normally. If it doesn't you may have an issue with the operating system which unless your computer savvy and have all of the computers original cds you'll need to take it to a reputable computer repair shop

Laptop turns on then freezes

Shut it off, pull the battery out. Unplug all devices that you might have plugged into the laptop (anything USB, cards, etc).
With the battery OUT, and the power cord unplugged, hold down the power-on button for about 20-30 seconds. Reinstall the battery and/or power cord and then boot the machine into safe mode (hit "f8" white booting on windows operating systems to get into the safe mode menu). Try booting safe mode NO networking (top choice). Still locks up?
Possible issues are
1) Bad or failing HD
2) Failing RAM
3) Virus or drive issues.

Booting into safe mode should allow you to run a virus scan, then clean and defrag the HD and check for resource conflicts or "flags" for issues (control panel, administrative tools, browse until you find "Event Viewer" and click each icon in the drop down field on the left and read the "errors" in red on the right).

We'll need your OS and laptop model number as well as things like wireless devices or anything custom you've done or have installed.

My laptop moniter turns on as usual with the proper reading. I start in safe mode as normal..wait about 10 min and screen goes white

hello

"I start in safe mode as normal."

safe mode is not a normal thing during your windows boot sequence :)
if your display works ok until those 10 minutes of safe mode are over i would say that reinstalling your windows operating system will most likely solve your monitor issues :)

The computer won't boot up. When I hit the power

For that when you power up the computer press F8 key untill you see windows logo then enter in "Enable vga mode" then go to display property and set screen resolution to 1024*768 then apply and ok.
If still same issue then enter in safe mode then uninstall graphic driver and reinstall.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

Acer 3680 was then shutdown by itself and now nothing

Try to boot up in safe mode and see if you get a good boot and screen. If you do then the update that you just got changed the resolution on your screen to something the monitor does not support and therefore you won't see or hear squat...if you cannot boot into safe mode, then there may very well be a MOBO issue.

PC SHUTS DOWN ON ITS OWN

Could be a few different possibilities-
Power Supply failing
Overheating Issue
Virus-

first thing i would do is to try booting the computer up into safe mode with networking. to do this:

Shut off your computer and turn it back on- immediately start pressing the F8 key repeatidly until you get an advance boot menu- then go to safe mode with networking and press enter on your keyboard- See if Windows operates normally while in safe mode- If so then issue is probably a Virus.

Safe mode business

safe mode automatically comes up when you didn't shut down properly. Just select boot as normal or last known good configuration then you are good to go.

uninstall any new hardware or software you have recently installed to cause the problem in the first place. If you haven't installed anything then windows should just start normally.

good luck
