I had already tried to eject button and a Sony repair agent. All drivers & software appear to be ok. This next part may sound stupid, but this computer has a CD Drive that is working fine. Can it be changed to a DVD drive, If so how. This PC is my parents that only use it in limited ways and since a CD can be played in A DVD drive then if I could convert the usuable drive to DVD that would work. Thanks ALot for everyone's imput

Unfold a paperclip and push it into the tiny hole, it will open up.
It may be wearing out..I see a lot of older ones do this.

It sure could be changed to a DVD drive. Just pull out the cd drive and replace it. Just make sure that the jumper is set in the same as the cd drive you pulled out...

If you need more help post the model number and manufacturer of the computer.

    Please rerate this post.

Dell cd drive door won't open

CD/DVD Drive Tray problems
There are two ways to open the CD/DVD drive door if the button just below the drive tray does not work.
Go to My Computer and right click on the drive and click on Eject.
If this does not work then you can manually open the CD/DVD drive tray by -
Straighten a paper clip and gently insert it into a tiny hole below the drive tray next to the Eject button. Push the paper clip gently until the drive tray pops out, then pull the tray until it is fully out, then you can remove the CD/DVD disc.
If you still having problem opening with the Eject button, then the CD/DVD drive is faulty and needs replacing.

Tray won't open and if you hit the button enough the light comes on thats it.

This DVD drive has a small processor in it. The button sends a signal to the processor to open the door. The processor then turns the light on and the door is supposed to open.
This unit is broken and needs to go to a shop as the IC that opens the door is probably bad.
Try this: get a paper clip and find the small hole in the door. This will manually open the door. Then use the button to close it. It could also be a mechanical failure..

There is a little hole the size of a pin where you can push that in and the drive will slide out. Located in the front where the dvd drive pops open.

DVD Drive door will not always open. No obstructions. DVD Drive light flashes, but door will not open. Is ther some software conflict?

The door drive motor may be frozen.
  1. Shut down the computer and unplug it.
  2. Open the computer casing to access the DVD drive from inside.
  3. Disconnect the cable on the DVD drive leaving only the power supply connected to it.
  4. Turn on the computer.
  5. Push the OPEN/CLOSE button on the DVD drive. If it does not open, the drive is broken or the door drive motor is defective. If it opens, push the button repeatedly to open and close the door repeatedly to release any frozen part.
  6. If the door does not stuck anymore, shut down the computer.
  7. Reconnect the cable and turn on the computer.

Stuck DVD tray

Turn off the computer and then use the paper clip to open the DVD tray.
If this doesn't work, then something is jaming and stopping the tray from opening. In this case, remove the DVD drive and dismantle the drive (ie. remove the metal cover to reveal the internal components and remove the CD ot DVD disc.
If nothing works the the DVD drive is faulty and needs to be replaced, these drives are not expensive.
