Fridge not cold

By Uglybronco on Jan 15, 2008

My Fridge is not getting cold but the freezer is working great. It is one that my girlfriends dad has been using for quite some time & it worked well. When I got it here it worked great at first. When this started he said something about having to take a hair dryer to a hole in the back of the freezer? Help, my food is gonna waste quickly like this.

- Its a GE TBX14SAXKRWH All I know is its probably a early to mid 90s model. Its 134a refrigerent... The defrosting thing sounds more likely because it worked great at first. But I need to figure out a way to fix it ASAP... & If I had the money to have a repairman come do something to it then I would just go buy a new one.

- No frost on the back... the fan on the back is running. I don't hear one inside if that is what you're meaning. Also it only has one temp control. Not seperate for fridge & freezer if that helps any.

- OK, so I pulled out some of the plastic, the fan inside is not turning... I can't tell if it may be the problem or what controls that. It turn with low effort but kinda has a magnetic type drag on it (VERY low drag) Also there is a styrofoam port leading downward that was full of ice. I poked a lot of that out with a knife. I'm thinkin of maybe hot wiring that fan to see if it works... but I guess I could try the volt meter 1st... Thank you in advance for the info...

- Ok, new discovery before I read the last one. I looked inside again & could see the fan trying to move but its not. So apparently that's the problem... & Yes the compressor & its fan are running & cycling fine. I could kinda see through the hole from fridge to freezer so I think I'll treat that to some hot water & maybe find a way to prop the hair dryer up in there on cold air mode so it'll blow into the fridge... should work for tonight..... Thanks a bunch.

Jan 15, 2008

- hey if your compressor is running so should the evaporator fan right dark lord you may need a new fan and if those ports are stopped up then check to see if the drain is frozen or stopped up with algae where the silver honey comb metel thing under the back panel should be a tray under that with a drain hole hope you can see it pour hot water there and see if it drains if not you will need to clean it out let me know what you find ok just reamber the freezer cools every thing and if the drain is stop-ed up you may need to pull the freezer floor plate and clean the ice so air can circulate freely ill be standing by for more assistance should you need it me or dark lord will catch you

- there is no speed control for that fan on your model so save yourself some time it either runs full bozo or not ok

Sounds like your fridge is running out of gas,, Call a Aircondition or Refrigation technician and let him re gas it for you...

It cant be frost cause it sould have affected your freezer not your refrigation unit.. Normall when gas is running low the first thing that is affedt is the refrifgation section ,, the freezer shows signs a few days / weeks later and eventualluy stops cooling all together... RE GAS IT FAST BEFORE IT BURNS YOUR COMPRESSOR OUT..
