Re: Tracking display will not go away

Try unplugging the unit for 30 minutes and see if that takes care of it. Just turning it off won't clear it because as long as power is coming to it ex. plugged in, it won't clear. If that doesn't take care of it you may have a problem with the selector board. If so get yourself a new VCR as it will cost more than it is worth to fix it.

How do you Adjust tracking

Most have a actual pair of buttons, when in play try the channel or sound buttons on the unit itself as sometimes they play that role when in play.

Usually VCRs do not offer specifically labelled tracking buttons as such, however they may incorporate tracking into their channel UP/DOWN buttons, both on the front of the main unit and/or remote. Some brands also offer V-LOCK (vertical lock or still image adjustment) (in pause mode during playback) to stabilise the image, reducing vertical jitter, which again can be adjusted as required using the same buttons as used for tracking. In most cases, pressing both CH UP and CH DOWN together while the tape is playing should centre track (revert back to auto tracking) the unit.

I am sure if your VCR has channel buttons on it, try pressing either one while a tape is playing. See if it affects the tracking at all. If it does, press both buttons together for 5 seconds or so, then release - auto/centre tracking takes over.

It costs nothing to try this, and it won't hurt your machine or your tapes.

Hi. I am using a Panasonic 4 Head Hi-Fi Stereo Omnivivion to convert VHS tapes to DVD. It appears that the tracking needs adjusted, but I do not see anything on the unit to do this. Can you help?

Normally the tracking control is on the remote control. Some models do use the up & down channel selectors on either the remote or the front panel of the VCR. If you don't have the remote, the best way to test if it is these controls on the front panel, is to start a video playing a hold down the up or down key and watch to see what happens. If they operate the tracking, the tracking should go way off (do it on a video that is tracking well when first playing).
PS don't forget to clean the video head every so often (Servisol video 40 spray is best for that).

Samsung VCR SV-5000W Tracking Problem Symptom: I've used Maxell VCR Head Cleaner VP-100. Still having small white streaks across screen. I can apply small amount of pressure to bottom or top of VCR deck...

Your chassis ground is intermittant. Remove the VCR cover and look just behind the head drum. You will see two copper tangs sticking out, these supply the ground to the grey chassis and are a pressure fit. Remove the 7 screws from the grey chassis, two are underneath the VCR, two on top near the VHS tape opening, and three larger screws are on top of the chassis (2 near back and 1 near front). This will allow you to lift the grey chassis about a 1/2" and you can then reach below the copper tangs and gently pry them up. Reinstall the 7 screws and the VCR cover and the snow will disappear.

On most VCR's you can use the channel buttons to adjust the tracking. There's usually channel buttons on the front panel of the machine so you don't need a remote.

Where's the Tracking Button?

If the speed originally was LP, that would explain the problem. Many new units will not properly play LP tapes. Do other tapes play Okay?...accordianman

Counter display will not go away

The time-honored classic solution is a piece of black electrical tape!
Actually, try reseting the display processor by either unplugging it or some VCR's have a little tiny hole somewhere you put something like a toothpick into to push a button.

Jumping screen on sylvania 6240ve

Press the Channel up & down buttons at the same time and on most VCRs this deactivates auto tracking option. then press the up or down channel button to adjust tracking. You might try this first. pressing them both at same time reactvates auto tracking. This might not solve the problem but at least you eliminated one possibility.
