To remove clutch fan: 1. Remove the fan shroud. Remove the top screws & the two side screws with a socket & ratchet. 2. Remove the top radiator hose by using a screwdriver to loosen the clamps. 3. Hook the ends of the water pump pulley lock on the bolts on the outside of the water pump pulley. 4. Remove the large nut on the fan with the 1-1/16 wrench by turning counter clockwise. 5. Replace the fan by holding the nut perfectly level with the water pump post & start the nut by hand. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FGtech V53
The question is: How remove clutch in order to remove fan mounted on its engine-side face.
Generally, the clutch drive half shaft must be uncoupled from coolant pump (impeller drive) half shaft using special wrench kit available as loaner from AutoZone (free with $79 approx deposit).
Best done after shroud & radiator remove after coolant drained.
Uncouple coolant pump and fan clutch drive shaft(s) as follows:
span across combo-pulley-sheaves-unit mounting bolt heads with large tool kit wrench, and
span inline clutch coupling nut with small tool kit wrench. Then,
turn small wrench (and coupling nut) CW while resisting with large wrench (CCW) to turn coupling nut until disengaged from coolant pump drive shaft.
Remove fan/clutch assembly.
Note direction of mounted fan hub and fan blades orientation to ensure proper re-assembly.
On rear of clutch assy, remove 4 bolts to disengage and remove fan.
Assemble new fan to clutch (or, preferably, new clutch and new fan) using new bolts and washers provided with fan.
Couple fan-clutch assy to coolant pump drive shaft as per opposite of uncoupling step 1, above. (Turn inline nut CCW to tighten...30 ft-lb.
Check that fan can be hand turned...CW.)
Rest shroud over and onto fan.
Replace radiator; remount shroud; reclamp hoses, and refill and air purge cooling system.
to remove clutch fan you need to remove upper fan shroud, you need large wrench to remove the fan clutch retaining nut to remove fan and clutch away from the engine drive belt should keep pulley from turning while loosen fan clutch retaining nut.if pulley belt turns while loosen fan clutch bolt remove drive belt use strap wrench hold pulley while you remove fan clutch bolt this procedure for checvrolet if you working on volkswagon you need spanner wrench hold the idler pulley while you use large wrench to loosen the large drive nut to fan clutch. you have to remove fan with clutch from engine then you can remove clutch from fan you can go to auto parts stores rent a spanner wrench try auto zone they rent out tools.
since u removed the pump and fan assembly already place the pump carefully in a vice or some thing that will hold pump than use a strap wrench to hold the pulley and than unbolt the large nut it is a reverse thread so clockwise to loosen and counter clockwise to tighten
The big nut on the clutch unscrews from the pump. You'll need to get a chain strap wrench to hold the pulley or someway to hold the pulley, and a large wrench to loosen the nut.
Ok...the main nut that you arre tring to take off to seperate the two..It is reverse tread....so you have to go the opposite way to take it off. You may also need to go and buy this tool...
Now this one here is for a Ford, but the one you need should look similar...Remember it is a Reverse Tread, so be careful, and Goodluck
