Test your HDD (Hard Disk Drive): go
HERE, click Downloads and download Seagate Seatools for DOS (free). Burn the ISO to a CD, set your 1st boot device = CD drive and reboot with the disk in the drive. When the tester loads, choose the Quick Test in the upper left corner of the screen. It takes 5-10 minutes and will give you a pass or fail. If it tells your that SMART has tripped, or gives a fail notice, your drive is failing. You should have a warranty on that drive with Seagate.
If the drive passes as good, change your data cable. I have seen bad cables cause problems. Also check the power cable.
If you still have problems, enter Administrative Tools\Disk Management. Find your drive,
Right click on it, and click "Mark Partition as Active".
If still no joy, try changing the SATA port on the mother board that your drive is plugged in to.
If still no joy, contact Seagate customer help, they are very good.
Happens with my new Freeagent, also from Seagate. Tried changing the bioss to stop reading the USB port but then it won't read the Seagate drive!
