Turn the vac over, remove the plate covering the brush roll, then you can get to the belt and brush roll. Depending on which model you have, there should be 4 screws, or if it is an older one, there may be 2 clips to unhook the bottom plate.

Why won't hoover wind tunnel self-propel?

Hi there! The self-propelled feature is controlled by a belt. Check the belts on your Hoover Windtunnel by following these quick steps.

1. Recline the handle. Lay the cleaner fat and flip it over to expose nozzle base.
2. Remove the screws attaching the nozzle.
3. Check that the belts are not broken, stretched or damaged.

Replace the belts if they are damaged. Hope this helps!

Hello there! If you have replaced the belt and it is still slipping off, you may be not have the right belt for your vacuum. This unit takes a flat belt and a v-belt. Self Propel doesn't work on Hoover Wind Tunnel

Your self propel wire could be broken. Lean the vacuum back like you were using it. If you stand in front of the vacuum look down and to your left. When you move the selp propel button you should see a wire move. If not then it's broken.

Need help installing belt on Hoover self propelled upright vacuum

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Hoover Ultra U6430-900 Wind Tunnel Bagged Upright. The best way to install the belt on a Hoover to replace one or both of the belts @ the same time for the best cleaning. The average belt change is every 4 to 6 months for best results. There is a tool that looks like a screwdriver that has a right or left angle on the end that serves as a belt puller and to hook the belt(s) onto the brushroll 1st and then take your puller and then pull or stretch the belt onto the motor pulley. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Brush won't turn and self propel doesn't work (by 2 users)
Posted by brucelk on May 24, 2008
I have replaced both the v-belt and the larger belt with Hoover brand belts and the brushes still don't turn properly and the self-propel function doesn't work. It seems that when I lower the handle all the way down toward the floor it works fine, but no one can vacuum this way. Is there an adjustment to belts to tighten them up? Otherwise I have to get it in to the only repair shop in town which is an hour's drive.X

1 Other User Has the Same Problem Comment by chartsell, posted on May 29, 2008 I have replaced both the belts as well. I have tightened the screws as someone else as suggested. The brush still will not turn unless you lower the handle almost to the ground. Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Hoover U6437-900 / U6439-900 Windtunnel Vacuum. It is not so much the belts, the 2 belts are only part of the solution. The average belt change is every 4 to 6 months as a rule and to change them @ the same time. The Hoover Self-Propelled works on when the handle is lower to a comfortable position then the self-propelled drive may just need and adjustment. There is a self-propelled rod that controls the self-propelled feature and it either needs adjustment or replacement or the part that hold it may be broken but either one can be fixed. Hoover wind tunnel upright self propelled. U6473-900. Brush does not work. Heard it was a 'brush controller' problem and can be fixed. Please tell me how.

Most likely the flat belt has stretched enough so as to not turn the pulley that in turn turns the brush roll using a V belt. Also there is a small idler wheel, if hook up, then it won't engage the V belt.

Replace the belt

Take off the bottom plate, put the new belt on the motor shaft first, then stretch it to go over the pulley, it is hard, but it will stretch to go over it.
