Re: problems with harddrive

Before you do anything, I strongly advise that you backup your files on to another media, because if you re-format your hard drive, all files are erased and you will need to re-install them all.
Before getting drastic, what about using the system restore in XP and choose a date before you had problems, also under sytem tools, you have the disk cleanup and defragment utilities. If you have the original XP disk there is a repair function.
All/ some of the above should help improve the situation, and don't forget to clear out the temporary internet files, as they can clog things up very quickly. this is essential when you only have 4Gb disk which is not a lot these days.
Finally if add/remove programmes has not completely removed some programme traces, you can use "find" to locate then delete the other bits. Good luck

Re: problems with harddrive

Yes, you can reinstakk a fresh copy of your winxp be sure you the OS(Microsoft XP)Xp and all the drivers that you need. For the password problem, restart your computer, and then start pressing F2.once you're in your BIOS(a blue window that has some white textes).try to change the boot sequence.make your cd/dvd rom first on the list and then save and exit and then it will restart the computer.once you'll see a warning,"press a key to boot to cd" immediately press a key(enter or something).then you will go to the window set-up.(for a detailed installation guide just go to this site: SURE TO BACK UP all of your important files before reinstalling your OS,okey.for OS reinstallation-it will take 30-45 minutes to finish.with regard to your HD, it would be best if you'll buy a new one.A hard drive that has a bigger capacity.40GB or 80 G or more.the problem wit 4GB, is when the free space of your HD will be less than'll experience a slow performance in your is advisable to have more than 2gb of free space on your c drive

I -> S-U-G-G-E-S-T;

-> 1) Delete all programs you do not use, and applications. NOT Windows based however!
Same with photos, music, videos, and personal documents you have created.

When a harddrive is 50 percent full, the computer slows down.
This isn't noticed until you reach about 75 to 80 percent, however.
Then the computer starts dragging like it's worn out.

-> 2) Go to Control Panel, and defragment the Harddrive.

-> 3) Use the free CCleaner - registry cleaner, and cleanup the registry.
Need guidance in Downloading, Installing, or Using, post back in a Comment.

-> RATHER THAN ask for an ILLEGAL post on Fixya, when the Terms of Service you were supposed to read when you joined, clearly states this = NO, and asking = reason to say goodbye to your account,

Besides, doesn't take long to do the above, and you do not know if that program works anyway, lol!

Monitor frequently turns off

Even from 2008 solutions have solved a problem!

Good thing you are intelligent enough, to know the Power Supply is the problem, out of those old solutions, Christine.

Warranty? I'm almost willing to bet sitting here in this computer chair, that the Power Supply you installed, or had installed, is a low quality unit.
Not directed towards you, or whoever purchased it. We all like to save money.

I would get my money back, and look into purchasing a more reliable Power Supply, IMHO.

If this is a Compaq Presario SR5505f Desktop PC, as the problem title states, it uses an ATX form factor Power Supply, and is rated at a maximum Wattage of 250 Watts.

The ATX form factor is used in a LOT of desktop computers.
Plenty, and readily available,

These babies are RE-LI-A-BLE.
What's that? 430 Watts?

Yes. You should have at least 10 percent more power, than the computer needs. I know. A lot more than 10 percent.

Fact: A computer only uses the power it needs, and NO more.
If the computer for example, needed 100 Watts to surf the internet, it only uses 100 Watts.

Gaming? Using an intensive game program? Yes. Then you could use
UP TO the maximum.

If you replaced the Power Supply with a 250 Watt unit, as logic of course would dictate, it is no wonder it has gone on to the, 'Great Power Supply in the sky'.
Those units are cheap. Cheap as in low quality.
1) Low quality Rectifier Bridge
2) Low quality Electrolytic Capacitors
3) Low quality Power MOSFET's.
4) Light gauge wiring.

If you need guidance in replacing the unit, (If you were not the one who did), please post back in a Comment.

I have a HP Compaq Presario SR1820NX PC Desktop. But I have a problem you might be able to help me out with every time I try to start up it,s a black-screen and error 256 comes up and just constantly...

FIRST OF ALL, I suggest you buy an external enclosure, take the harddrive out of your Mom's computer, and install it in the enclosure.
(Before some nimrod deletes your Mom's files!)

The external enclosure has a USB cable. You just plug the USB cable into another computers USB port. Any available open USB port.
Copy her files to disk/s, or flashdrives.

The HP Compaq Presario SR1820NX desktop computer, comes with an IDE harddrive. (160GB)

IDE is also known as PATA.

Desktop harddrive's are 3.5 inches across in width.
(3 and 1/2 inches)

You need a PATA 3.5 external enclosure.

This is one example of a PATA 3.5 external enclosure,

(After you have recovered ***********'s information, you can install another harddrive in this enclosure, and have an external harddrive.
More storage space.
Plus it is portable.
She can take it anywhere)

HP Support > HP Compaq Presario SR1820NX desktop computer > Product Specifications,

(Not shouting)

If she does not have the Recovery CD Disk/s, then it is suggested to purchase them.

The disk/s are free.
The shipping and handling is not.

In the US it's $17 for a 5 to 7 day ship, $24 for a 2 to 3 day ship.
(Business days, not weekends, or holidays)

Call this toll free number in the US, 1-800-474-6836

Put the harddrive back into the computer, after you have copied ***********'s info off.
Start the computer.
Open the optical drive, (CD/DVD drive), put the Recovery Disk 1 in.

Go through the screens.
When you are asked, do a NON-DESTRUCTIVE INSTALLATION.
This is a REPAIR.

(Do Not do a Destructive Installation. That is a full install)

Have questions I'm right here. Post in a Comment. (I'll lead you step by step. Suggest you forget about your 'tech' friend)

Slow start with home edition of xp

The HP Pavilion a350n Desktop PC, came out in late 2003.

This suggests to me, that you may have had the computer a long time.

You need to clean the harddrive of,
A) Unnecessary files,
B) Fragmented files,
C) Unused programs, and applications,
D) Plus frequently defragment the harddrive.

A, and B.
The best method is to use a Registry Cleaner. I recommend a Free one.

A) It is Free.
B) It works as well, or better than the paid fore versions.

This is Wikipedia, and the article on Ccleaner,

The home page for Ccleaner is on the upper right, underneath the illustration.

Should you wish to download, install, and use this free program, come back with a comment, and I'll walk you through using it.
After you know how you'll find out it's really easy.

Every time you go to a website, you pick up cookies. These are harmless, but after a given time they take up space on your harddrive.

Whenever your harddrive is more than 50 percent full, your computer starts to slow down. You really start noticing it, when your harddrive is more than 70 percent full.

30 percent Free Space.

With Windows running, Left-click on Start, then Left-click on My Computer.
Look at Local Disk (C:)

This is your harddrive.
What percentage of Free Space do you have?

Don't see this? It could be the type of View you are using.
Go to the top header. Look for the icon that looks like a rectangle with 6 colored squares in it, and has a black triangle pointing down.
(To the right of the yellow Folders icon)

Click on the Black triangle. It's a Down Arrow. There will be a drop down list. Left-click on - Details

Now what percentage of Free Space do you have?

Whenever you have a program, or application that you have deleted, there will be file fragments left behind. These take up space on the harddrive.

When your harddrive has about 5 to 10 percent left of Free Space, your computer will crawl like a Snail.
You can't defragment your harddrive if you do not have enough Free Space left on your harddrive.

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs.

After the Add/Remove Programs list has populated, look for programs, or applications you may have installed, and rarely, If ever use anymore.

Get rid of the one's you don't need.
DO NOT Remove any Windows programs!

Unused programs/applications take up harddrive free space.

After you have removed all programs/applications that are unused, run Ccleaner.
Clean the Windows registry.

D) After you have enough Fee Space on the harddrive, you can run defragment.

(Start>Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Rearrange Items on Your Computer to Make Programs Run Faster.

If you do not see Performance and Maintenance, you are in the Classic view.
If you go up to the top left corner, you will see the Control Panel heading, and underneath it -
'Switch to Category View'

Left-click on it. If you desire the Classic View again, you can always switch back)

You may get a comment about using your restoration CD disk, to restore your computer.

1) IF, you still have the Restoration CD disk, you have my respect! Very few of us still have this disk after 3 years, much less almost 7.

2) BE AWARE, that you will restore the computer back to the way it was, when it came from the factory.

Back to Day 1.

This means any Programs, or Applications you have installed, or downloaded, will be GONE!

This means any personal documents you have will be GONE!

My Photos, My Videos, My Music, and any saved documents, or documents you have made. (My Documents folder)

Just wanted you to be aware of that.

Back up your personal documents to CD, or DVD disks. (DVD-R, or RW for videos)

You need the program, or application CD disks, to put them back on the computer.
You cannot copy them to a disk.

I await your questions.

I have a compaq presario S6000CL...had to delete everything and everything is going onto my windows disc and can't get it to distribute stating "not enough disc space"

Think you had a couple of issues here. You may just be better of putting in a new drive (very large) and doing a fresh install of windows and your programs.

If not, you are having the space problems because the installation of (windows and any other programs) did not install to the same place. Now you are faced with a messy problem. You will have to decide clean unwanted and duplicate programs from you C & D drives. This is 1.) NOT FUN and 2.) very delicate so that you don't delete windows directories (which can be so tempting with "what is this for? oh, i don't need it." mindset, which will happen to anyone after 4 hours of tracking down folders ((which is what you may be in for in extreme cases, and not doing this sort of thing all the time).))

My best suggestion is start with a fresh drive and then piggyback the old drives (or put them in an external chasis) in such case you need the old data at a later time. Hope this helps, Best Regards, -md

Do you know about computer GB free disk space

Yes. you have 221 gb available disk storage left. 5 gb will hardly make a dent in that.

You can right click on the computer icon and then select properties to view a pie chart representation of available space if that makes it easier for you.

I need to add space to my compaq presario desk top. i don't know how to on this computer. the model# SR5034X

If you want to increase cpu speed so you need to increase RAM memory.
You can fix it on motherbord of desktop cpu.
But if you have low space on disk storage partition so you can add space to desktop with 2 method.
(1) you can add harddisk to desktop cpu with sata or IDE .SATA harddisk is best if your motherbord support SATA.
You can add harddisk as you like for example 80 GB or 160 Gb.
(2) If you want to add RAM memory for speed reson you can purchase new RAm and fix it in memory module slot on motherbord.
There is 2 type on
RAM in currently.
DDR1 and DDR2

you can add RAM memory like 512 MB or 1GB or more.

80gb harddrive that only says it has 34gb

Using a program like Parition Magic would allow you to adjust the partition size of your current partitions. It is possible that Compaq has used some ot the hard drive space for its recovery and restoration software. You could combine the current partitions into one larger partition. It is also possible that another partition exists using a Linux or other non windows operating system.
