Before you do anything, I strongly advise that you backup your files on to another media, because if you re-format your hard drive, all files are erased and you will need to re-install them all.
Before getting drastic, what about using the system restore in XP and choose a date before you had problems, also under sytem tools, you have the disk cleanup and defragment utilities. If you have the original XP disk there is a repair function.
All/ some of the above should help improve the situation, and don't forget to clear out the temporary internet files, as they can clog things up very quickly. this is essential when you only have 4Gb disk which is not a lot these days.
Finally if add/remove programmes has not completely removed some programme traces, you can use "find" to locate then delete the other bits. Good luck

Yes, you can reinstakk a fresh copy of your winxp be sure you the OS(Microsoft XP)Xp and all the drivers that you need. For the password problem, restart your computer, and then start pressing F2.once you're in your BIOS(a blue window that has some white textes).try to change the boot sequence.make your cd/dvd rom first on the list and then save and exit and then it will restart the computer.once you'll see a warning,"press a key to boot to cd" immediately press a key(enter or something).then you will go to the window set-up.(for a detailed installation guide just go to this site:http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/winxp/install.mspx).BE SURE TO BACK UP all of your important files before reinstalling your OS,okey.for OS reinstallation-it will take 30-45 minutes to finish.with regard to your HD, it would be best if you'll buy a new one.A hard drive that has a bigger capacity.40GB or 80 G or more.the problem wit 4GB, is when the free space of your HD will be less than 2GB.you'll experience a slow performance in your computer.it is advisable to have more than 2gb of free space on your c drive

Garmin Street Pilot C330 new map installation

Hello  Dimin,
If you have more than one harddrive, make sure that you are installing the program in the harddrive with the 274 GB of free space, and not in the other harddrive that mightnot have that 3083 MBs of free space

Formated 4 gig harddrive and loaded xp, now no space left

You need a larger drive, or less programs. windows uses 2.88 GB and likes 1 GB to swap in.
Try going into control pannel and add/remove programs and on the left side of the screen there will be add remove windows components - to delete things you don't need. Games, MSN explorer, fax services, desktop wall paper, mouse pointers, paint etc. All of these will free up 50- 60 MB. Which isn't a lot, but its something. There are also ways to delete all the help files, and empty folders, duplicate files etc. The bottom line is a larger drive is required.

Slow start with home edition of xp

The HP Pavilion a350n Desktop PC, came out in late 2003.

This suggests to me, that you may have had the computer a long time.

You need to clean the harddrive of,
A) Unnecessary files,
B) Fragmented files,
C) Unused programs, and applications,
D) Plus frequently defragment the harddrive.

A, and B.
The best method is to use a Registry Cleaner. I recommend a Free one.

Why?
A) It is Free.
B) It works as well, or better than the paid fore versions.

CCleaner.

This is Wikipedia, and the article on Ccleaner,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ccleaner

The home page for Ccleaner is on the upper right, underneath the illustration.

Should you wish to download, install, and use this free program, come back with a comment, and I'll walk you through using it.
After you know how you'll find out it's really easy.

Every time you go to a website, you pick up cookies. These are harmless, but after a given time they take up space on your harddrive.

Whenever your harddrive is more than 50 percent full, your computer starts to slow down. You really start noticing it, when your harddrive is more than 70 percent full.

30 percent Free Space.

With Windows running, Left-click on Start, then Left-click on My Computer.
Look at Local Disk (C:)

This is your harddrive.
What percentage of Free Space do you have?

Don't see this? It could be the type of View you are using.
Go to the top header. Look for the icon that looks like a rectangle with 6 colored squares in it, and has a black triangle pointing down.
(To the right of the yellow Folders icon)

Click on the Black triangle. It's a Down Arrow. There will be a drop down list. Left-click on - Details

Now what percentage of Free Space do you have?

Whenever you have a program, or application that you have deleted, there will be file fragments left behind. These take up space on the harddrive.

When your harddrive has about 5 to 10 percent left of Free Space, your computer will crawl like a Snail.
You can't defragment your harddrive if you do not have enough Free Space left on your harddrive.

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs.

After the Add/Remove Programs list has populated, look for programs, or applications you may have installed, and rarely, If ever use anymore.

Get rid of the one's you don't need.
DO NOT Remove any Windows programs!

Unused programs/applications take up harddrive free space.

After you have removed all programs/applications that are unused, run Ccleaner.
Clean the Windows registry.

D) After you have enough Fee Space on the harddrive, you can run defragment.

(Start>Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Rearrange Items on Your Computer to Make Programs Run Faster.

If you do not see Performance and Maintenance, you are in the Classic view.
If you go up to the top left corner, you will see the Control Panel heading, and underneath it -
'Switch to Category View'

Left-click on it. If you desire the Classic View again, you can always switch back)

You may get a comment about using your restoration CD disk, to restore your computer.

1) IF, you still have the Restoration CD disk, you have my respect! Very few of us still have this disk after 3 years, much less almost 7.

2) BE AWARE, that you will restore the computer back to the way it was, when it came from the factory.

Back to Day 1.

FROM THE FACTORY

This means any Programs, or Applications you have installed, or downloaded, will be GONE!

This means any personal documents you have will be GONE!

My Photos, My Videos, My Music, and any saved documents, or documents you have made. (My Documents folder)

GONE!

Just wanted you to be aware of that.

Back up your personal documents to CD, or DVD disks. (DVD-R, or RW for videos)

You need the program, or application CD disks, to put them back on the computer.
You cannot copy them to a disk.

I await your questions.

80gb harddrive that only says it has 34gb

Using a program like Parition Magic would allow you to adjust the partition size of your current partitions. It is possible that Compaq has used some ot the hard drive space for its recovery and restoration software. You could combine the current partitions into one larger partition. It is also possible that another partition exists using a Linux or other non windows operating system.

Compaq presario 1685 is this particular system xp compatible.

Unfortunately, the Hard Drive size is only 4.3 GB, while WinXP takes 3 GB and requires at least 5 GB to run. Even if you did have an external Hard Drive, the amount of RAM is not enough to let you do anything. Stay with your current OS or get a new PC.
