Question about Compaq Evo N1020V Notebook

Cannot get Modem to dial, but tests okay

I began having problems and not being able to connect to a dialup on the laptop. I tried everything and couldn't get it to work, so I got another (supposedly new) modem to replace it. The modem tests okay, but when it dials, it doesn't actually dial out. I don't know what else to do. I've deleted the com port and let it reinstall upon bringing it back up, etc., but cannot get it to work. Is it the modem or something else I don't know what to correct.

I was using a regular phone line that we use daily.

I've tried other phone lines and the phone number is working fine because my home computer is connected and dials fine. If I plug this laptop in and try to call, it will not. It's as if the instructions from the modem are not getting to the telephone line. I tried hyperTerminal and it got the same info "No Dialtone." Have anyone ever heard of the cable from the modem to the connector on the laptop or the connector being bad? I don't have technical support with the company for internet service. I've restore the computer to the point it came from the factory, so there shouldn't be anything interfering with it. I now have two modems, both testing okay (according to the troubleshooter), but neither getting a dialtone.

Thanks for your help. I think I'll have to get an external modem, but didn't know what to get.

Are you using a regular phone line, or a VOIP line?

Tryr another phone jack in your house if you havent already. or plug in a normal telephone to the outlet your computer is hooked up to and make sure the line is good.

Also did you recently add voice maiol to your phone line?? if you pick up the phone and it goes dt-dt-dt-dt and then gives a dialtone the delay causes the computer to not know it is reaching an outside line.

Finally do you have technical support with the company you pay for your internet service??? they can probably help you narrow it down as well easier than us guessing online.

If replacing the internal modem didnt work then i would just buy a PCMCIA modem - the best ones are the 3com modems with a built in "Xjack" phone jack. The models that are plug and play in XP are the 3cxm556 and 3cxm756 which i see on ebay for $10-$20. Then you dont have to worry about replacing the internal cabling or if the phone jack on the back of the machine is damaged.

I have a netzero dialup and when i try to establish a connection i get "dialing, redialing in 5 seconds, dialing..., unable to establish a connection" How do i establish a connection?

If you turn your sound up on the computer, do you hear a dial tone? Does it then begin dialing? If not you may have a bad modem. Try dialing the ISP's number with your phone, it should dial in and you should hear various beeps and so on, if not the ISP is down.

Acer aspire 9410, cannot connect to the internet using dial-up

You have two different devices here. A modem and a wireless network adapter. Two totally different devices. It sounds like the modem quit working but the wireless network adapter still functions. I'm assuming that the modem is built it. If you absolutely have to have it you could buy a PCMCIA modem if your laptop has a PCMCIA slot to plug it into. You could also have a corrupted modem driver.

I have s dell studio 15 laptop. i got a dell conexant rd02-d400 modem so i could use dial up with it. now i get errors that say it can't connect, but that everything os ok.. error 692 and 618 (i think)...

hello,

Connect your modem to the phone line and test the modem.

Control Panel-->>Phones and Modems. Click icon. Tab Modem. Highlight your modem, and Click Properties--->>Diagnostics. Verify that everything is OK.

Then Start --->>All Programs -->>Accessories-->> Comunications ---Hyperterminal.

Enter a name for a bogus connection, Click OK
Enter your phone number and dial it. If Phone/Modem connection is OK, you shoul hear the busy signal.
Alternative:Run the Dell diagnostics.

If Modem connection is correct you must then create a dialup connection.
Hope it helps.

Trying to connect to dialup with acer laptop notebook

Right click My Computer icon and then My Properties. Click on the Devices tab and check hhe list for Modems. See if your modem appears and if is correctly installed (an exclamation point beside iyour modem, means there is an instalation error).

If everything is OK, you still have to setup the dialup connection:enter the phone number to connect , the username and password, supplied by your ISP provider.

Connecting router to dial up

I don't believe that router is designed to be hooked directly into the phone line. That would be your problem. The process is much more complicated than simply plugging your phone line into the router instead of the laptop.
