How did these "parts" get disconected? Was someone in the computer?

It may be necessary to bring it to a shop and have them look at it.

Please be clear on what the machine is doing when its on. (error messages, etc.)

I have a hp dv4 series which ii bout about 2 years ao and the laptop gets very hot and turns of! i no that these machines have this as a common problem which hp is aware of. faulty nvidia graphics card....

The laptop shuts down because the thermal protection is triggered. The reason for the impaired circulation of air inside the laptop. Spend just cleaning the interior laptop and if necessary replace the fan. I think in 2 years it accumulated a lot of dust which is known as the bad conductor of heat ;-)))

HP DV2945se will not start. will charge and the light comes on.

That means is going to on but it would n't boot or bring anything to show to on the screen then you will have to check the memory module if it is properly installed on the memory slot or probably you dust it to cause it dust free and again if that persist try checking the processor if its fulctioning and the processor fan ok

The inside of the laptop may have a lot of dust in it and may need to be cleaned. It might also be worth while to get a laptop cooler. Something like this:

System shuts down

The heatsink is obviously clogged with dust, adding the extra cooling like you have has helped but the build up of dust has obviously now become critical. You can try blowing compressed air into the proccessor/heatsink vents in the back of the case but the best answer is going to to open the case and physically brush/blow the heatsink clean.
If you feel confident enough to open the case, this site can help you with some pointers:
