Kenwood stereo B-B5 Power Amplifier/Graphic Equalizer

By ChrisK2001 on Jan 14, 2008

Hi, I have a broken Kenwood B-B5/B7 Power Amplifier/Graphic Equalizer. The power keeps going on and off. The system was working perfectly then a couple of days ago it started cutting out in mid-play. I have tried to clean it but now it does not seem to start at all. It makes a continuous kind of clicking noise as if it is trying to switch on, but does not. Any ideas on how or who can fix this. It is such a great stereo, i don't wand to ged rid of it just like that. Thanks & Regards Chris

Clarification Request

I am having the same trouble with the same component, and have not had any luck in solving the issue. Although I am new to this forum I have to admit, I am not impressed by either of the two posted solutions to this problem. Neither of them has a clue, it has nothing to do with the ribbon at all. The problem lies in the power transformer which causes the relays to continually open and close, which is the clicking sound you hear, I know this because I own one, and have taken it apart far enough to physically see it while it is happening, and you do not even have to have the ribbon attached at all to do this. Now, how to solve the issue, I do not know other than replace the power transformer, which Kenwood no longer carries unfortunately. If anyone has any intelligent suggestions I would love to hear them as this is a very nice little system when working. Would be a real shame to have to scrap entire stereo because of this one issue. I'll await any response. Or email me at : elixermixer@q.com
Thank you.

Same Problem

-   I have the same problem. It turns on. When I start to play either a tape or the radio it cuts out then goes back on and cuts out again. I called Kenwood and they said its a short somewhere.-   tonkin

-   Same prob as Chris the Kenwood amp B-B5 has developed, no power and a clicking sound. My guess is that it may be a relay prob .
Had a look inside, couldnt fully determine which if any of the 3 relays it is.
Have tried to see if i could aquire the relays (DH2U 12DC TV3 DEC732 AND 733) but again without success.
Now i'm stuck anyone got any sensible suggestions before it goes in the skip.?

I've got the same problem and read somewhere that it is a relay problem. It has such a great sound its a shame to bin it for what might be a straightforward thing to fix. Help!

Replace capacitor 110 (47uf 25v), it fixed my problem, should cost about 25 cents and take about 1 hour of your time :-)
