I have a GE JES1358 1200 Watts Microwave oven that does not heat. When it runs the fan, turntable and interior light are all working and there is a loud buzzing or hum that comes and goes. What is wrong?
There should be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel
or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when
troubleshooting, &
testing.
At
our Web site, we have a video available
showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5
minutes.
A loud buzz, hum, or groan is usually a shorted high voltage rectifier diode,
but a sound like gurgling into an empty
coffee mug is one symptom of a failed magnetron, and yet the mag can be bad
without that sound.
Here are some links you or someone you know can use (in order given) for high
voltage section test help, but read the safety warnings first:
http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it is NOT shorted or burned looking, it's probably fine)
You can find links to helpful exploded
view diagrams and part ordering help
here.
I'd recommend that your bookmark this link to your favorites.
Accessing some parts may require you to
pull the oven from the wall and remove the cover.
If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have
two
people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.
You can download GE owner's manuals and
installation instructions
here.
If
it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years)
but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your
manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or
the labor charge to do the work.
If
it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty G.E. will
send you the magnetron to do it yourself. Call them at 888-239-6832.
Be persistent. You may have to speak with a supervisor.

The microwave was working fine prior to that but now it does not does not put out any cooking power. This microwave is not quite 2 years old and while we were trying to pop some popcorn the microwave started to spark a yellow orange light and make loud exectrical popping noises before the popcorn could start popping. The glass tray was so hot I burned myself. We have stopped using it and wonder has there been a recall on this unit and if not what should we do. It scars me as we often allow our kids to cook TV dinners and the like. Thanks for any help with this. I was having the same problems with my microwave. Sometimes when I used it I could hear the electrical noises and popping. This morning the microwave completely stopped working. The lights will come on and the timer will start but the microwave doesnt come on.
