Question about Belkin Wireless G Plus MIMO (F5D9230-4) Router (1010835)
I have bought a Belkin G Plus router for online gaming with the Xbox 360. i just plugged it in and started to useit, and it works fine. My neighbour came round and told me that he can see my router on his pc. how do i secure it so only my xbox can see it. my pc has windows vista.
Others will be able to see your router if you broadcast your SSID (basically, the name of your router). If you want that to be hidden, then there should be a setting to turn off "broadcast SSID".
If you turn off SSID broadcast, then you'll need to know it when you connect a new device to your wireless network, because it will not show up in a list of available networks.
This is considered more secure, but potentially a hassle.
Just because someone can see your router doesn't (necessarily) mean they can connect to it. If you have encryption (WEP or WPA) turned on, then they will need a passphrase to be able to connect.
In addition, you can limit access to your router to certain machines by using MAC address filtering.
