I put a brand new cartridge in and it didn't fix the insert right cartridge error message.
I have a feeling those little broken off black pieces of plastic may have something to do with the problem.
I never did like the way that if you left the cartridge latch open and the machine automatically returned the print cartridges to the right side rest position that there was nasty parts grinding sounds.

Re: "Insert right cartridge" J5780
U better check the catridges first specially black catridge,or get it tested on any other printer, but before that wipe the back side circuit section of the catridge with a tissue paper,n try,if the catridge is ok then the catride unit is has to be replaced

Did you insert a brand new toner cartridge or refill only, if you insert a brand new they read your toner cartridge, if you insert a refill toner cartridge, first you need to reset the toner cartridge, i think in the right side, or left please switch and back to normal position.
When you're on Copy mode, press the Menu button on the printer operator panel.
Press left/right button until Tools is selected on the screen.
Press left/right button until Clean Cartridges is selected on the screen.
Your printer will then print a test page forcing ink through the cartridge nozzles and clean them. After the page is printed, try to print your document/file again to verify if problem is resolved.
You may also try to reseat the cartridges by removing both cartridges from your printer > close the printer cover > unplug/re-plug the printer into the power source to reset it > when the printer turns on, firmly re-insert the cartridges. Try to print again.
If that doesn't help, try to insert different known working cartridges.

Hello thanks for using Fixya In HP Officejet J5780 All-In-One InkJet Printer cleaning the cartridge is not difficult, but it is
important to use the appropriate technique. The things you need is
"Cotton swabs" & "Distilled water" Now follow this procedure
Open the front door of the printer, located below the scanner
lid, by swinging it down. The print cartridges will move to a position
where they can be accessed
Unplug the printer to prevent the cartridge dock from moving away from the center of the printer.
Press an ink cartridge down until you feel a "click" then pull it out of the dock.
Dip a cotton swab in distilled water and use it to clean any
built-up ink from the metal contacts on the ink cartridge and from the
area around the ink nozzle. Avoid touching the nozzle itself, which is
located in the center of the bottom of the cartridge. Discard the cotton
swab if it becomes dirty, and use another to continue cleaning. Keep
cleaning until the ink cartridge is no longer dirty, then set the ink
Remove the second ink cartridge and repeat the cleaning process. Set both cartridges aside until they are completely dry
Replace an ink cartridge by holding it slightly below the
dock, then pushing it up and in until it snaps into place. Do the same
with the second cartridge. The black cartridge is inserted into the
right slot on the dock, while the color cartridge is inserted into the
Close the front door of the printer, plug the printer back in, and turn it on.

Dip the bottom of the cartridge in some hot water. This should open the head so the ink can flow out freely. Once the ink is flowing into the water remove and dry the whole cartridge. Insert into printer and print.
Several Steps to take.
If all else fails try a new or different cartridge before you get too carried away looking at the printer for the problem.
1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for approx. 30 seconds (some units take this long to bleed the power out of the unit).
2. Plug in the printer and step thru the start up procedure (turn it on what ever - not the set up program).
3. Retry the cartridge alignment procedure.
4. If alignment still fails verify that the cartridge electrical contacts are clean and the jet opening is not blocked.
5. Reinstall after cleaning and checking.
Lets try all factory resets, that will resolve this issue.
PARTIAL RESET:- Unplug the printer power cable while its ON, press and hold # and 3 button and connect the Power cord while holding.Wait until the ON light flashes, then release the buttons. If it didn't work try next reset.
SEMI_FULL RESET:- Remove the ink cartridges, Unplug the printer power cable while its ON, press and hold # and 6 button and connect the Power cord while holding.Wait until the ON light flashes,or wait for 20 seconds, hen release the button. If the printer goes off don't worry release the button and Push the ON button. If it didn't work try next reset.
FULL NVM RESET:- Take out the ink cartridges. Turn the printer OFF. Unplug the power cable from the back of the printer and from the wall outlet. Press # and 9 simultaneously and while holding # and 9 insert the power cable. Then release the button and turn the printer ON.
If you still have the same problem, printer needs to be serviced.
