Re: Cover over lens doesn't open properly.

This is a common fault and is caused by dirt/dust/sand particles interfering with closing/opening of the lens cover ( btw before you do anything else try blowing out with compressed air ). Solution :

1) repair yourself route ( if brave and skilled enough) : remove screws and fron cover compltely. Unsolder six thin wires on the left hand side of the circuit board. When front cover is removed blow out sand /dust from the lens cover which is now quite accessible.
2) send to repair outfit route . Note that this is not an expansive repair which does not require installation of spares. So perhaps you should send it in.

Foldable lens cover doesn' t open and closed fully... Thanks.

It's usually merely a grain of sand or dust jamming it. But it's also usually easy to fix. This link outlines repair techniques for a stuck automatic lens cover. Recommend trying the less "risky" ones first before considering the end of the lens.

The cover over the lens is two pieces. The top one open and closes properly but the bottom one is stuck in the open position leaving the lens unprotected when the camera is off.

Following are the instructions to send your camera to Olympus for service.

Olympus will charge a flat rate repair fee for this product if beyond the one year factory warranty or the warranty is voided. The cost is $86.85 plus your local sales tax. This covers parts and labor, factory cleaning and diagnostic check, 6 month warranty and the cost of shipping the product back to you is all included in that price.

Barrel and lens cover of the canon sd750 don't open completely.

Sounds like it's dirty or the springs have been dislodged. You can tear it apart yourself and see if you can rebuild it, or send it to us and we can fix it for about $40!

Don't bother with a store, they will tell you it needs a new lens for $175! Go ask, you will see.

If we can help, let us know.

Lens cover is stuck half way open on Lumix DMC-TZ3

argh! me, too! i love this camera, but the lens cover is just plain stupid. we used the camera at the beach for a couple days, and i could tell a grain of sand got stuck behind the lens cover. now it is jammed and the camera is totally out of commission. why make a camera built for outdoor conditions, then put a lens cover like that on it!! i can't find a tech who can fix it, either. went to three shops in NYC and all said the cost to deal with it would pretty much buy me a new one... ! :(

Lens cover stuck DSC600

You may have the same problem that i had. It does involve taking the camera apart. Not overly difficult - just fiddly.
Let me know and i'll talk you thro' it

Lens cover only opens half-way

If the lens barrel isn't fully extending on power up, that will prevent the lens cover shutters from springing open. There is a stationary prong that pushes the cover closed when the barrel is retracted.

Does the camera work otherwise? Take pictures thru the half open lens?

Lens cover stuck open

I recently had the lens cover stick partly open.  There are 4 segments to the lens cover, and if we number them from the top, number 2 was not closing.
I gently flicked the segments a few times, in case there was a grain of dirt causing it to stick (although the camera has never been in a dirty or dusty environment).  This caused the lens cover to close fully each time, but now it would not open fully, segment 1 would not open, although it would stay open if moved by finger.
Anyway, after a bit of fiddling, I got it working properly again.  The way that the lens cover appears to work is that only segments 2 and 3 are pushed open or shut by springs, segments 1 and 4 are pushed open and shut by tiny tabs that catch on segments 2 and 3.  If the segments somehow get pushed out of alignment, then they either bind (causing the cover not to shut), or they get disconnected (causing the cover not to open fully.
Now I am not sure exactly what I did to get the mechanism form the stuck open state to the not opening state, but from there the way to fix it is to:
-With the lens open...
- Hold segment 2 in the closed position with firm finger pressure (which will tend to push it towards the lens).
- Push segment 1 towards the open position until you can see that it has cleared the edge of segment 2.
- Lift segment 2 way from the lens so that it will rub past segment 1 as you...
- Move segment 1 to the open position.
- Repeat if necessary to get the technique right.

I can't provide any guarantees, and I am not about to repeat the excercise on my camera, but it was a lot easier than sending it off for repair.
