Question about Projection Televisions

1 Answer

Part identification I have a big screen tv. Model no. is PPR400P. I believe it is about twenty years old. I have been all over creation trying to find service literature for this thing, but up to now have been unsuccessful. The problem I have is on the power board. There is a 3watt resistor that is burnt beyond recognition. The board location is R916. In it's burnt state, it measures 33 ohms. But examing it as close as possible, it looks like it used to be 47 ohms. I need to know the correct value to effect this repair. If you guys could help, it would be great. If someone has the service manual, that would be even better. Thanks in advance. Lawrence

Re: part identification

Thats a RCA You'll have a hard time finding the service manual to that. But when a resistor burns it usually means something else made it burn so you need to look into the cause or a new resistor will almost certainly fry as soon as you power up. Hope this helps.

What or where is the sound card? We inherited

There is no separate sound card unless it is a commercial monitor. If it's just an old TV then the sound section is composed of many parts on the main circuit board. If the TV is older than 10 years it probably isn't worth the money to fix it.

We purchased our 53SBX01B when big screen TV's were first introduced. Could you estimate how old our set could be

A quick look on the back of the set will in addition to the model number show month and year the set was made---this is on all tv sets and may be in small print but is there.

There is a deep hum that started coming from my 20 year old huge Mitsubishi floor model TV. Any ideas? I know, buy a new one, but I love this old hunk of a TV. Thanks !!

Certainly a new one would solve the problem but from what you have said it would seem that yours should be reaparable. The only question would be whether it would be worth fixing if it costs alot to fix. Putting a large amount of money in a twenty year old set is usually asking for trouble. You said that the unit has a loud hum. Sounds like a low voltage power supply problem. I have a tip at

which will walk you through the troubleshooting process and should help solve your problem with the least amount of money.

Samsung 42 inch projection tv. around 3 years old. have white dots on the screen. Payed a lot for this junk tv.

A model number would have helped me diagnose your unit but because you say that you have white dots on the screen, and the unit is only 3 years old, I will go with what I believe your problem is. I am assuming that you do not have a CRT projection unit. I believe you have an lcd projection tv which is starting to have TFT panel failures. As they age they lose more and more pixels which show up as white dots. The only cure for this is a new optical engine. Cost could be on the order of $350 US. The replacement is not that difficult and can be done using my tip at which will walk you through the process as well as link you to the best place to get the parts you need.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the excellent rating. Great ratings keep experts helping everyone solve their problems. Thank you.

RCA model P60812BL 10 years old picture goes fuzzy once on

Your convergence amplifiers are begining to malfunction. This is not expensive However I would advise that you get a qualified TV technician to work on the set due to a chance of damaging you TV if you install the amplifiers incorrectly.

I hope this helps

thank you,

Resistor identification

Hi fccjben;

The color code is as follows: blk = 0; brn =1; red = 2; orange = 3; yellow = 4; Green = 5: blue = 6; violet=7; Grey = 8; white = 9

Unfortunately, if it is wirewound, they usually printed the resistor value on the body of the resistor. For sure it shouldn't be glowing. Sorry I can't be more help, but without a schematid, can't do much else

Good luck Loringh

Panasonic 53" HDTV rear projection tv Blue on screen

I had the same issue. Basically, it's a convergence problem. The video chips overheat. And believe it or not this will happen every 4 or 5 years. I paid $400 to fix my Panasonic big screen tv. To top it off, I believe it was my xbox that did it - well, maybe it just pushed it over the edge since I've also had my tv for 4 years. But I still highly recommend not using an xbox on these big screen tv's since it will shorten the lifespan of the video chips by 50%! Rich
