It could be that the PCB or the connection within the external casing has a problem.

Try disassembling it and putting the Hard Disk into another external case to see if the disk is okay, if it is then viola! you have your data back.

If that was the case, the driver could be corrupted. try uninstalling then reinstalling it.

When you plug it in, does Windows XP ask you to install the driver or outright tell you that it is not recognized?

    To uninstall the driver

    - Plug the Device

    - Go to Control Panel

    - Click on System

    - Select the Hardware Tab

    - Click on Device Manager

    - The device will have a ? indicating its status. Right-mouse click on this then select Uninstall.

    - Shutdown your PC. Unplug the device.

    - Restart your PC. Run the Installer that came with your Harddisk. When you have finished installing it, plug in the Harddisk.

    Hope this helps

Uninstalling it would allow a new driver to be installed so it would kinda make it a fresh start.

My desktop crashed. I lost everything on it. I thought I downloaded some informatin on my Seagate Externa harddrive, however, I am having problems connecting to other computers to see if any information is...

External hard drives are plug and play, the drivers are build into windows.
IF the hard drive was connected when your computed crashed, and the hard drive was in use, it may have damaged it.
If it does not automatically connect to other PC's looks like it has been damaged

Seagate Barracuda external hardrive - damage to usb connector on

Assuming the drive itself is still ok (it sounds like it would be), then yes, you can put the drive into another case or directly into the motherboard if you know how to do that.

Installing 1tb External Hardrive from Freeagent onto Macbook Pro

I would be tempted to format the drive using the disk utility whch can be found under applications and then utilities once opened choose your drive in the left hand window and on the right hand side click on erase. If you are using the Seagate drive for the Mac only, format it as a Mac OS Extended (journaled) Choose your volume format and name and then erase. Hope this helps.

I called apple about this and they said there is no mac driver, that a mac should read a seagate external hard drive without any driver. My file system was ntfs.

Seagate 500gb Free Agent Ex Hard Drive - Class Action siut

DO NOT buy a Seagate freeagent drive under any condition if it comes as a gift return it or re-gift to some one you don't like. Like so many others my 500GB external drive just quit working. Has only been plugged in about 6 times and then back into a cabinet to keep safe. In 10 years between 2 workstations 3 laptops and 4 external drives. The only drives that have ever gone bad are the Seagates and newer Maxators. I still have 4 Western digital drives that still work and get used in an external case for back up. They have never failed. Seagate should be responsible for data time and mental anguish.
