Question about Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) Console
We have had our Playstation 2 console for quite a few years. We are not gamers but we like to play every once in a while. We have never had a problem with it until my son got a Guitar Hero II for Christmas (2007). We were playing our old games on the console a couple of weeks before Christmas. We put in the Guitar Hero and it was really cool and we played a few songs on it and then it started cutting out. It kept getting worse and worse until the whole picture just locked up and we could not play Guitar Hero at all. At this point, we went and had the Guitar Hero disc professionally cleaned or buffed because we thought there may be something wrong with the disc. That didn't work. When the screen froze, we also thought it may be the guitar; but we could push the colored keys and still see the notes light up, the screen just wouldn't move. Then I tried playing all of the discs that we were playing before Christmas and now the ONLY ones we can get to work in that console are the ones from BEFORE 2002. Anything 2003 and newer, it says there is no disc or disc cannot be read! I was so frustrated with all of this and my son, of couse, wanted to play his game, that I went out and bought a new PS2 console for $129.99. The Guitar Hero game works great, but now none of the controllers we have from the old one (and we have 3!) work with the new console. I have not even had a chance to see if the 2 racing wheels we have work with this new console. This has been most frustrating and EXPENSIVE. We spent a lot of money on the console we had when they were first new and have a lot of money into the accessories. Our items are certainly not overworked or misused because we have ONE child (12 yrs old and we got the game system when he was about 6 or 7) and as I mentioned, we have ALWAYS been here when he has played and we don't play very often - just when we get the urge for some family competition. I certainly never intended to spend another $130.00 on a new console! (The guy at the video store tried to get me to buy a PS3 but why would I want to do that when we don't play it enough to warrent the cost?!) Why won't any of it work anymore? I do not want to spend any more money on accessories - I have spent way too much (money AND time!) on this already!
Sorry - just extremely frustrated!!
It appears your laser lens and drive hub may need cleaning

The PlayStation 2, like the original PlayStation, incorporates circuitry to prevent the playing of copied or out-of-region discs and programs produced by people who are not paying percentage to the Sony Corporation (unlicensed games etc.). User response to this - grey market for modchips. PS2 Mod-Chips when installed, bypass the checks and allow the copied CD-R and DVD-R backup discs to run.
Obviously the installation of mod-chips in PlayStation 2 consoles is widely discouraged by Sony -- the reason is piracy. You must know that Sony has overlaid a seal onto each of their PS2 consoles. If this seal is broken (thus providing evidence that the console has been opened and "modded"), Sony will refuse to repair the system. On the other hand if your console is more than one yer old and no longer covered by the manufacturer warranty you should not worry about fraking the seal -- it will not change anything.
It can be done spending around few $15 to $20 i guess.
I own a PS2 which is modded before a year and still it works with out any trouble. You can ask if u have any questions about PS2.
