The kids may have gotten bits of food or candy from their fingers into the button holes. First try using a dry scrubbing brush around the buttons to get out any particles. If that does not work use a damp cloth (damp not wet) and wipe around the buttons. Candy will stick and takes a little work to moisten and remove. There is no way to repair the button as they are in sealed plastic modules. Recommend putting the VCR and CD/DVD player out of reach....
h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00834092.pd Above is your manual. All things are fixable it simply depends on if you wish to spend the $$ to repair. In my opinion, after that long, the monitor should be replaced, as even if repaired it would still have old components in it, and we find, that once a unit faults, it will usually fail again inside of a year, according to stats too. So you would be better putting any money for a repair into a new monitor with a warranty...

christoph972, This really sounds like a SMPS going into SHUTDOWN MODE after detecting a fault in the "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamp" electronic ballast circuit which is called an INVERTER CIRCUIT, or it has a problem all by itself. The big question is? ? ? WHAT is causing the fault? I need you to do the flashlight test to evaluate the condition of the LCD monitor's "switch-mode-power-supply". With a KNOWN-GOOD, fully booted pc that has the WIN-desktop showing, reconnect the S760 to the pc. then and only then push the "ON" button for the monitor and note what happens. After the screen goes black, shine a bright flashlight at different angles about 1" from the LCD screen. Get back to me with the results of test. Did you see or not see the WIN-DESKTOP? Also visit YOUTUBE and search for and view videos of typical lcd monitor disassembly and or lcd repair. FYI only!! The longer ones (8-12min) will be more informative. The symptom you have with this freebie monitor is classic! It could possibily be repaired for $12 or less. Get back to me here at fixya by posting another comment to the above stuff you already did. Well... sure it fixable, but it is going to cost you a bundles... Since you own this monitor for about 10 yrs. It's time for you to give yourself a new LCD monitor for the Holidays... :) Have nice day!
I have a similar problem. Switching the screen off (front panel button) and on again after waiting a few seconds fixes it. This is a recent problem, so I'm expecting it to get worse and worse until one day!!!!!!
