There are several BIOS updates for your system. I will give you a link at the bottom. Did you install your HD drive as a master, slave or CS(cable select). I know Compaq uses CS in all of their systems. Do this first before the BIOS update. Hope fully this should help you fix your problem. Also what are the requirements for your HD Drive? Does your system meet these requirements? For your system f10 is how you get into the BIOS.

It could be this paticuler drive have a different bios it self...and yes drive's do have chip's and software in them. If nothing ells just load the OS to that drive anyway and than change the drive letters in windows.

I am going to install a new graphics card, do i need to disable my integrated card firts and then shut down and install the new one?

In your BIOS it should be set so as to auto detect integrated graphics or AGP.
This is the default setting for HP and Compaq machines.
Install the card and see what happens, if you have no video, shut down the machine and either remove the new card and then set the BIOS to auto detect or if you saw the BIOS splash screen with the new card installed but got no graphics, then again go into the BIOS and set it to auto detect.

Can't get BIOS settings right

First check to see if your drive (the 160Gig) is set to master or slave. If you are going to use this drive as your primary drive (boot disk) it must be set as master, and it would be drive 0. If, on the other hand, this is a second drive, it should be set as "slave, and should be drive 1. If there is an auto-detect HDD in your Bios, try that. If not, and this machine still won't detect your HDD, you may need to download and install a Bios update, because if your Motherboard is too old, it may not recognize a 160 Gig HDD.

BOOT.INC default= signature

Your old hard drive contained files used by the OS, as well as the OS itself. If you replaced that HD with another, and did not clone your existing install onto the new HD, then there is no boot record, nor is there anything to boot. It is not possible to just swap a HD and expect it to work without either cloning the old drive or performing a fresh install of an OS. The fact that it is detected by the BIOS is good, as you can install a new OS onto the new drive, or use a program like Ghost to clone your old drive's contents onto the new drive.

New hard drive on old e-machine. "No operating sys"

First of all did you install an operating system on your HD like windows or linux, copied doesn't work really good, take out the old HD for the new one and install the operating system. You can always afterward copy your old data on the new one
To enter into Bios puch "del" "F2" "F5" and "F8" simultanously (depend on the bios) when in bios go in BOOT menu with left or right arrow. then go down on the new hard drive and put it on top of the list, usully with F5 and F6 (how to use the menu is describe on the right), then press F10 and "Y" (yes) to accept the modification...

Hey there, the HP bios is pretty smart - it should automatically detect a new sound card and switch off the internal one when installed - alternatively you can go to the 'system devices' panel and disable it in the software as well.
hope this helps

Emachine boots to bios with a new hard drive installed

Go inside to your BIOS menu then set the BOOT sequence to CD as the first boot so when your PC with the operating system installation disk inside it will load the installation wizard.
Good luck hope that helps........

Keep getting cant read disk reboot

The message "can,t read disk" is indicative of a defective hard drive in the eMachine. In most instances, this refers to a hardware problem and can only be corrected by replacing the defective hard drive and re-installing the Operating System as well as all other software/applications. This can be verified by entering the CMOS/BIOS set-up and trying to manually detect the HD. If it even manually detecting and the HD will not show up, then the defect has been confirmed.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Hi, You need to enter your CMOS/BIOS setup and set your "First Boot Device". Immediately after powering up, press the "Del" key, display will show CMOS/BIOS settings. Verify that all your hard disks are being detected/recognized by your PC. Thereafter, set your First boot device to your new HD. Save and Exit. Hope this be of some idea/help.
