According to the specs from HP, your max ram is 2G. However, that chipset supports up to 8, so i suspect you can go higher. Take it to a computer shop that does free install of ram and let them try. If it works, they will be happy to sell it, if it doesnt work, they wont make you buy it.

If you want to go 8G of ram, you would need a 64 bit operating system. 32 bit vista uses a bit more than 3G.

Could you please go online and in a search engine type "MAX RAM E-Machines (here put your model #)." Pick a link that secribes your maxi,um ram and if it's only 2GB you'll have your answer. If the max is higher there should be instructions on how to set the computer to acess and show the RAM.

My computer will not boot up when 2 g ram

Try upgrading your Bios first, also make sure that the memory that you ar putting in your Laptop is type PC-2700. Other than this, I know that this comptuer has a 2G limit and should have no problem with it.

Sony Vaio computer not recognizing added RAM

First, do you have a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system. Unless you have the latter, you will only see 3GB maximum.
Second, did you look at the Sony specs (you didn't say what model you have)? Chances are your Sony maxes out at 2GB.

Adding RAM

If it has 4 slots and supports 2Gb max with 2 slots currently populated with 2 x 256mb chips you'll need to remove both those chips and install 4 x 512mb chips to reach the max of 2 Gb.
