5100 is a carriage error, usually caused by grease on the clear encoder strip behind the carriage assembly. You can clean the strip with a damp Q-tip just damp with plain water.
Testimonial: "That seems to have done it. Just ran 6 pages of the same text and graphics that had previously been interrupted by the service error 5100. Thanx. JDB"
5100 is a carriage travel error, unplug when carriage is in the center and slide back and forth to see that it travels freely from one end to the other. Inspect the area with a flashlight to see anything that doesn't belong that could stop the carriage. One time I found way over on the right, a gray piece of plastic about the size of a large aspirin, that would stop the carriage just short of where it should stop.On one model you take out 2 screws in the back right and 1 in front to take off the right cover and grease the plastic sliding unit as it was stopping the carriage.

Tried it once, damp q-tip, cleaned the strip, but on the first printing attempt afterward, got the same service error 5100 dialog box and the printing stopped halfway through the page as the earlier attempts. The solution sounded logical, but has not as yet worked for me. Other thoughts?
