Need to add wirless to a Think pad264741U

This model Thinkpad does not have a built-in wireless card, you have to install an external wireless card.
First you need to decide what type of broadband and Internet service you require and these are -
1. DSL that uses your existing telephone line.
2. Cable that uses a cable service and can include a cable TV service.
3. A wireless 3G network uses the mobile/cell phone network and can be separate or combine with your cell phone account. This type of Internet connection uses an USB wireless device shaped like an USB memory stick.
Note - Combined services generally offer discount pricing and may include a modem/wireless router.

If you use a wireless router with the DSL or Cable Internet service then your laptop with a wireless card can then connect to the Internet. You can also connect to a free WiFi hot spots like McDonalds, Star Bucks, the Airport etc. using the wireless card in your laptop.
If you use the wireless 3G wireless broadband service, then you can access the Internet anywhere where your ISP has 3G wireless coverage. You need to check the service coverage area where you need Internet service.
Once you decide what type of broadband your require, then you need to check with the various Internet Service providers to see if they can offer and the cost of the various plans.
Note the download limits and the associated additional costs if you exceed the monthly download limits. Once you sign up with a Internet Service provider, their documentation will include setting up instructions and/or installation CD.

I can not get the internet to come through - can not even get a browser to come up - Only dial up options and I have wifi

Your internet settings have an issue. if you can open up the network connections and click on the available ICONS , you will be able to confirm the status and working. If not remove the connections and reset the internet settings according to the router or enter the WIFI password.
No dial up option is required for WIFI and all what is needed is to select and set up a new internet connection with the protocol needed.

IBM ThinkPad T20

Wow, a lot of information but I'm unclear as to what you are trying to do.

Are you connecting the T20 directly to the T40 using a cat5 cable and then trying to access the internet on the T20 via the modem?

Connecting the two computer together using a normal cat5 will not work, you need to use a crossover cable otherwise you are connecting the send to the send and the receive to the receive.
You can also use a hub, a switch or a router if you have any of those on hand.

As for the modem, I suggest you unplug the telephone line from the modem and plug it into a phone and see if you can hear a dial tone. If you cannot hear a tone either the extension is bad (replace) or you outlet is defective. If you can hear a tone, the modem card may be defective.

Wireless connection

There are a few requirements other than the laptop and the wireless card. You need to also have an Wireless AP/Router that must be connected to the modem that connects to your ISP. All your PCs must then connect to this router either using the wired/Ethernet ports or WiFi.

If such a device (WiFi AP/Router) already exists and is connected to your modem and your other PC(s) are tied up to it and can access the Internet, you need to install the drivers (in a CD that came with the wireless card) to your IBM ThinkPad. Thereafter, you need to configure your laptop's wireless networking to access the AP/router. Your AP/Router must also be configured to accept wireless clients.

Please post back with brand/model of your AP/Router.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

No internet connection

Your hardware could be bad, or you may need to adjust your software settings.

Besides uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers; what else have you tried.

Need to know any error messages.

Need to know about the network (and its security settings) that you're trying to connect to.
