    i have the same problem.
it seems to be that windows media is what causes it to keep shutting it off when you connect it.
if you disable the media player, the rca will stay on but you cant transfer files.

I bought an RCA Lyra Opal MC4008A 8GB MP3 player for my daughter for x-mass... it worked fine for a few weeks...now..like everyone else who bought this piece of ****, it died, won't charge, tried it on 4 different computers, XP all upgraded to the latest PACK 3 an Media player, unlike what they tell you, even with the upgrades and a brand new computer, the damn thing don't even light up. I keep getting " USB NOT RECOGNIZED", my suggestion is simple: take a hammer, smash it and buy a good BRAND, forget RCA, its not what it used to be, its a real piecve of **** !
And if you're concidering ANY RCA product, buy something else, it most probably will NOT !

  • Pammiemeiste May 21, 2009

I have the same problem.  Bought one for my daughter for Christmas and it worked for about 2 weeks then nothing.  It is now May, and just two days ago we received a new one in the mail from RCA/Audiovox.  Tonight I'm trying to download her music with Windows Media Player and it won't work now.  Doesn't charge, the computer won't recognize it and it won't turn on.  I think this RCA product is a piece of cr*p and I wish they would just sent me my money back!!!!!  At least I could buy her a shuffle that would work.

Go to your nearest electronics store and buy a new, better Mp3 player. Seriously, this happened to me too, and the website nor the FAQ on the easyRIP program could help me at all. They kept telling me to update the firmware, but I can't do that if the computer won't read the player.

But I digress. To reiterate - buy a new player from a company that actually knows what they're doing. I did it, and it worked for me.

Write rca and complain. They need to recall the product.

Hi,
I have to disable Opel or do an uninstall from Device Manager then reconnect it to be able to get it to charge.

Hello, I was having all kinds of problems with the rca pearl not working. It would not recognize it or download to it. I reformated the player and then with windows media player I went into rip then into options. I told the computer to save my ripped cds directly to the player. It worked like a charm. I now have all kinds of music on. I have not found any other way to get music on the player and I am a newer mp3 user. I have vista and it worked fine on my xp but not on vista except with this fix. Hope it helps.

Mine was one of the postings above. Ended up after multiple contacts with RCA/Audiovox that the Opal that I had was not compatible with Windows. So they sent me one that was compatible and it works very well. We haven't had any problems since. Thanks to Audiovox for making things right.

I've actually had mine for a very long time. About 2 years. But a couple of months ago, it started giving me trouble when I wanted to link it to the computer. Sometimes it would turn on, but it would rarely ever connect. And I need it to now more than ever.

Why wont my mp3 player charge?

Posted on Aug 10, 2009

I have the same problem.
it seems that the windows media player is causing it to shut off.
if you disable the media player, the rca will stay on but you can transfers files.
so far i haven't found another media player that will work with the opal.

The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

its not your son's fault. Apparently this product sucks. I contacted RCA and they told me that if i had my receipt they'd send me a refurbished product or to send in $55 and they'd fix it. apparently MANY other people have problems with this product. My suggestion is if you have the packaging and receipt just choose another product. RCA knows this product sucks yet wont recall or help in fixing it.

SOURCE: i can`t find the reset button on my rca opal m4001 mp3 player

Some models have reset switches some do not.
Look on the back of your mp3 there should be a tiny hole there.
That is the reset switch for most opal. Other way to reset is hold power button down for 15 seconds.

If you cant find it you will have to go to the RCA website and download the latest firmware.

There is a hold switch on the right side of your mp3 player. Just flip it off and you should be good to go, otherwise if it is froze, just take a pin and push the reset hole on the back

hope this helps

i think the one causes it is the improper unplugging of your son maybe the program of your mp3 player was corrupted.
You try to plug it on your pc then try to check if your pc detects it. if its detected try to check it on your mp3 player application and see if theres a repair function on it, if not, well you better look for a function that formats your mp3 player

Hi, you can try to upgrade the player's firmware, you can download it from the RCA Website (moz-screenshot.jpgmoz-screenshot-1.jpghttp://support.rcaaudiovideo.com/downloads.aspx?product=187), the firmware it's the second app listed.
If your computer doesn't recognize the player, you'll have to turn it off and keep "PLAY" pressed for 10 seconds while connecting it to the USB port, then update the firmware.
