Question about Sony KP-43HT20 43" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Sony with blue screen

Well the Sony 43 inch rear projection TV is approximately 8 years old so I guess it doesn't owe me anything. Was watching it, everything was fine, turned it off, moved it two feet, (I was careful) and when I turned it back on, the screen was all blue, no sound or picture. Any ideas?

Make sure you are on tv slection and not video1 ,aux . pull up menu go to setup look for cable/air make sure you are in tv mode not video aux.if this does not fix it then you may have bad tuner.

It has been quite sometime, that I have repaired this TV. In one case the audio IC with standby is bad. The symptom you describe, is my first area of trouble shooting. You may resist the temptation to replace this TV. I understand. It would be better to replace this TV. Sony is a unique TV, and parts for this may be substituted with non originals. Even if this set is repaired, it will be a matter of short time that it will go down. I would certainly shop for a new Sony flat screen TV. Your chances of having a long running TV is in your best interest. Thanks for asking and show all hands of support!

Picture will freeze occasionally for approximately 30 seconds, then return to normal. Switching channels seems to take care of the freezing right away. It is a 53 inch rear projection about 8 years old,...

Blue Vertical Lines on the screen

It means the optical block is going bad. Contact Sony support. They will sometimes warranty these even after the 1yr warrany has expired. Have your model and serial numbers handy.

Bottom right side of screen (about 4 inches high) has blue tint

I had the same problem with my 4 yr old Sony KDF60WF655 rear projection set, and I was fortunate to buy a 4 year extended warranty - because it was the "Optic Block", ($1300. -not incl labor), that was replaced to fix the problem. That part contains all new LCDs, & multiple Lens & some electronics. I had already got a new bulb (under warranty) a few weeks earlier, that I had not yet installed so the service guy did replace that as well. (This happened 3 weeks before my warranty ended).

He told me that he replaces hundreds of Sony Optic Blocks every year and that many Sony Rear Projection sets have automatic FACTORY extended warranties (up to 10 years), because of some known problems with the blue LCD panels. You might want to contact a SONY office & see if your set is covered.

ALSO - The tech checked my Service Codes & showed me the TV had been running for 10051 hours in about 4 years - on the Original bulb! He was quite surprised because he said the bulbs usually last about 5000 - 7000 hours. He also said it's good to replace them BEFORE they go bad, because they can sometimes burn out the amplifier that powers the bulb, (which is a seperate piece that attaches to the outside of the Optic Block). My TV is like new now.
