I just turned on our pilotless oven and noticed the smell of gas. Turned it off naturally. The stove worked fine earlier in the day.

You could have a weak ignitor which can cause a smell of gas, I would have it checked unless you have a way to test for amperage. Test with amp probe should read 3.2 -3.6 amps if less than 3.0 replace ignitor. I hope this helps.
Good Luck

Ignitor working, but oven won't heat, gas in house

if the igniter is not at 100% it won't allow the gas valve to open. Sometimes people say they smell gas. this is another sign of igniter failure.

Our Viking oven (approx. 8 or 9 years old) seems to be taking longer to preheat and we have noticed a gas smell when the oven is on. Last night, it took at least a half an hour to reach 350.

What type of Gas do you have?-- Natural Gas?-- or Bottled Gas?
The reason I ask, is that If your gas supply is in a tank,-- the tank might be low..)

If you have Natural Gas, and you suspect that you smell gas, You can call your Natural Gas supplier, and have them check for leaks.

So-- If you know you do not have a low gas tank, then you need to call your utility first.

Gas stove When I turn on the oven, I smell gas,

This is more than likely the igniter to be sure you will need to do an amp draw on the igniter. To do this watch the video on troubleshooting a gas oven at

Our oven doesn't heat and smells like gas

This sounds like a weak igniter, it would have to be a gas oven and the symptoms usually are: takes longer than normal to ignite the burner, may or may not smell gas in the oven, does not maintain set temperature or burner does not come on fully, eventually won't heat at all. On gas ovens, a glo igniter is like a light bulb, the more you cook, the faster it wears out. Bottom line, needs to be replaced. Good luck.

Co smell during oven use

What you are smelling is the protective grease against rust or corrosion that came originally with your oven. the odor is normal if you are just purchase the oven.

I will rarely say "call a professional" here because this is a do it yourself site right?

However, in this case, you obviously have a gas leak and/or malfunctioning gas valve.

Unless you have experience and training in detecting gas leaks I highly recommend shutting the gas off to the unit, ventilating the area, and calling a pro.

Gas can be very dangerous if handled improperly and a mere spark can "make house go kaboom".

If you are smelling it strong enough that you have to open windows, it is a potentially dangerous situation.

You most likely have a defective oven bake ignitor.  Call an experienced tecnician.
